We are living through a perilous time when our political and cultural discourse is riven with vitriol, venom, and condemnations. Democracy does not run well when we fear each other. At Pepperdine Caruso Law we have a few efforts to stand astride these divisions, to build and defend a better culture of engagement and dignity, and to teach students to discuss divisive issues constructively. Among those are the Open Conversations the law school hosts since 2015.
Love - the recognition of the fundamental, divine dignity of every person and the discipline to act on its implications - is the foundation of justice, democracy, and the rule of law.
Thanks to the dean for sharing my essay/sermon preaching on it and calling us to a better road with ancient wisdom.
