Data geek, mostly Oracle stuff. PIT transplant to YVR.
In #Unix Programmer's Manual (1979), the `find` manual entry has a BUGS section listing "The syntax is painful." as a bug.
A common argument I come across when talking about ethics in AI is that it's just a tool, and like any tool it can be used for good or for evil. One familiar declaration is this one: "It's really no different from a hammer". I was compelled to make a poster to address these claims. Steal it, share it, print it and use it where you see fit.

If a hammer was like AI…

Computations will “estimate” your aim, tend to miss the nail and push for a different design. Often unnoticeably.

Let’s say it loud and clear:

There’s nothing wrong with promoting your small business, your art, books, your services on mastodon or any other social media.

Self promotion is not an ad!

It’s being part of a community.

People have to do it. Other people might need and want the good stuff their community members might offer.

Mutual support and buying from your community members is good, wholesome and necessary.

Boost if you agree, so creators feel welcomed to self promote here

Oddly enough, seeing people tooting about a SoCal earthquake is giving me hope that Mastodon might be a viable site-formerly-known-as-Twitter replacement
Next time you read an article about how #BCFerries is struggling with on-time departures, staffing, etc…spare a thought for the poor guy who had to spend nearly 30 minutes (not an exaggeration) entreating drivers of 3 vehicles in 2 lanes to return so they and the dozens of vehicles stuck behind them could _also_ board the already-late ferry.

In which my attempt to maintain an even tone in the face of encroaching American Fascism cracks and I emit an unrestrained howl of rage. Also, you get to meet a deceased anti-Fascist with a lesson to teach: https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/202x/2023/05/15/Antifa-Ethics

Regardless of how many decades you’ve worked in IT, and no matter your current role, you will always have days where you spend way too much time troubleshooting:
1) Printing stuff
2) Issues created by passing Windows-formatted output into shell scripts

(Strictly speaking the second is a subclass of the first, but today they were discrete episodes, bah)

I meant to be finishing a post about books I'm reading but I got distracted and wrote ~2500 words about Mastodon and Bluesky and the related things (welcoming design, insular culture) I've been stewing on for a few months

And also about vegetarian meat substitutes in the 1980s, which were *really something*
