The explanation that "these people have never looked up" is silly. These people looked up plenty they just didn't have a fearful story in their head about unexplained phenomena coming to get them. Now they do and what they "see" is different. We all experience this quite often, like when we choose sides to watch sports and suddenly only "see" the fouls committed against "us." Different things can make us more or less susceptible to this but don't kid yourself that you can't experience it
@grimalkina OMG quality rant thank you!

A view of software development as “cumulative culture”, emphasizing that “knowledge, practices, behaviors and innovations are transmitted socially”, […], “allowing individuals to use and contribute to a shared solution space”.

Wonderful work by @grimalkina and @anthrocypher.

Those of us who love Moby-Dick know that even if it doesn't have all the answers (it's actually about that, in part), it certainly knows all the questions. I've read Moby-Dick more times than I can count & every time I hope Starbuck will end the reign of Ahab's fascism/madness. He never does & it never ends & everyone on the Pequod who takes an oath to follow Ahab -- w/the exception of Ishmael, of course -- dies. I am teaching Moby-Dick again this spring. We'll see how it goes.

If you find yourself wondering what you should be doing now, the answer is probably the same as it was yesterday.

The most important thing you can do is build, grow, and participate in your community.

The work happens in kitchens and coffee shops and bookstores and libraries and living rooms and concert halls.

Make friends. Support your friends. Be ready to defend one another if the moment calls for it. Figure out how to get to the other side. Figure out how to slow down. Figure out how to get off the ride. But you're doing it together.

Terrific & uplifting Susan Faludi essay. “Ms. Harris isn’t looking to compete on the symbolic field. She’s not playacting a guardian stereotype of either gender. If Mr. Trump embodies the make-believe rescuer, the bombastic redeemer who speaks loudly while carrying a tiny stick, Ms. Harris is his levelheaded, no-nonsense opposite.” #GiftLink #politics #election https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/06/opinion/kamala-harris-donald-trump-security.html?unlocked_article_code=1.QE4.WZwg.MYtWunkOtWn3&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare&sgrp=c-cb
Opinion | Kamala Harris Can Beat Donald Trump at Protecting America

Trump wants to position himself as the nation’s protector. But Harris is offering real-world, practical protection on the issues that matter.

Medical costs force baby boomers to sacrifice savings, retirement

Some baby boomers who hoped to retire are instead draining their savings and cutting costs on food, travel, and housing to pay healthcare bills.

Notice how comfortable the NY Times is, favorably comparing Harris to Biden. Can they favorably compare her to Trump? No, they cannot. It is forbidden.
