@scottjenson

2/2

- motive is not personal (πŸ”₯). People in OSS aren't just "scratching their own itch", they do chop wood and carry water, stuff that's not "fun," but having a pull request accepted is πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡
- UX designer has to be *part* of the team, break up UX deliverables, but also need to be part of bigger projects (not just one PR at a time). So tiny chunks, but part of a cohesive idea/plan (sounds like a tricky balance)
- seems like middle-sized FOSS projects have the hardest time

How to create UX culture in FOSS @scottjenson

1/2 bc this was so good

- baby steps! celebrating each PR completion = creating a cultural understanding of what UX is (wow celebration creates culture whaaaaat)
- Talks about tools for our "community" rather than tools for "citizens" because most OSS tools are for devs (Hey this is us!!!) (wow what if we switched)
- get UXers inside the project! Inside the cycles, the team, the processes
- UX takes time. Lots of projects don't have it

@TheTechScribe talk on Measuring the impact of community events #fossback
- folks don't sell things at community events. "direct measurement" of ROI is nearly impossible
- what's your goal of going to a conf? Fund-raising? Community building? Find participants? Networking?
- create collateral that *can* be measured (landing pages for a project, track that)
- best Q to ask at conf: "what don't you like about my project?" Stories! (Kinda ROI). People are gonna be fairly nice at confs, and honest!

@ProvenPudding
"Open source as a tool for democracy and peaceful coexistence" that's the good stuff

@spot
2/2 #fossback
- people don't get excited about "the thing," (code) but rather: the appreciation I got, the things I did with those people, the relationships I have with them
- you have to "chop wood and carry water," that's a part of community
- when OTHERS see folks being appreciated, those folks who see that might be more likely to contribute (bc they see other folks are appreciated). Non-dev work too!
- how could you inject weirdness into your community (start from the things YOU love)
Notes from @spot 's talk at #fossback : Embracing your weird, community building with fun & play, 1/2
- power of open source is in community, about people making meaningful relationships with themselves and others, working together. Communities are made of people. (Code is a part of it)
- if people have fun together, they will like what they do, less likely to send mean emails to each other
Notes on how to talk to managers about OSS, by @rbowen
- Don't talk about FOSS like charity, you'll be the first to be cut
- "this is one of the pieces your product is built out of. If you're putting a million into your product, make sure every piece will be alive next year"
- if you have a minute to convince, don't talk about philosophy, it's not enough time!
- illustrate the cost of failure (if x project were to go away/we'd have to maintain it ourselves)
At #fossback with @xyflow hats find me if you want one and like node based UIs
