Undersea cable failures cause Internet disruptions for multiple African countries

Internet connectivity in several African countries was disrupted on March 14, 2024, beginning at approximately 05:00 UTC. Based on published reports and social media posts from impacted network providers, the disruption is believed to be due to multiple undersea cable failures in the region.

Meta laid off another 10000 people today. That’s 21000 people total that Meta have let go due to an egregious spell of over hiring. 21000 lives thrown into chaos and no one will be held responsible.

Take big tech to congress and make them pay

It's amusing to me that star trek imagined a world where an AI faces social rejection because he's rational, fact based, literal, fiercely/dogmatically moral, and struggles with social nuance. But here in reality we invented AIs that have no concept of truth, give zero fucks about accuracy, have no rationality, and can't do math, but match vibes and tone nearly perfectly.

The first artificial person will not be an autistic science officer. It'll be an extremely allistic salesbro or politician.

So @internetarchive scanning books for their digital library is copyright infringement:

But OpenAI slurping all of that to train a model that then can generate text and put actual authors out of business (already happening with copywriters), is not.

Figures, there are no $billions of VC / corporate money behind Internet Archive, why would anyone want to support a public service, right? 🤦‍♀️

IA ≠ AI, know the difference!

The Fight Continues - Internet Archive Blogs

Today’s lower court decision in Hachette v. Internet Archive is a blow to all libraries and the communities we serve. This decision impacts libraries across the US who rely on controlled digital lending to connect their patrons with books online. It hurts authors by saying that unfair licensing models are the only way their books […]

By now, many of you have seen the footage of the monk (or mud wizard) facing off with hapless riot police during the defense of #Lutzerath this past weekend.

If you have not seen it, treat yourself to it now:

In fact, this mysterious figure already appeared in 2018, during the defense of the ZAD (the "Zone to Defend," a longtime squatted area where the residents blocked the construction of an airport) at Notre-Dame-des-Landes.

According to le Monde, the police ambushed the monk among a group of other defenders. The monk threw three buckets of water at the police, proclaiming "I baptize you in the name of the ZAD!" In the ensuing chaos, he made off with one of their batons.
