LOL, Jesus Christ.

So we are right back where we started.

Why?

Because mother fuckers don’t want to listen.

All that time wasted and good will lost because an organization that is allegedly for the good of the web did the exact thing we shouldn’t be doing.

And that’s giving bigots the benefit of the doubt. Again. https://mastodon.social/@eff/113801429396283911

Happy anniversary to those who joined the fediverse this time last year.
A big thank you to Kim, Erin, and an anonymous person who bought me groceries this week. It's absolutely very much appreciated.
Now, I need your help to help another blahaj.zone person who needs to buy food. Please check out
@sewerkat 's post or just drop some euros here: https://donate.stripe.com/aEU17p2yzc5ccZW288
Thank you so much for helping folks eat.

I'm putting together an Amazon wish list so folks can send me groceries and I'm wondering if there's non-Amazon platforms that would also allow similar so say someone in the States can order off a list & send me groceries and toiletries here in Australia? Any suggestions?
Let this incident with Kainoa/Firefish and those alt-righters serve as a reminder that many of those nazis are determined to capture communities and projects because they cannot build one of any significant size or market on their own. Almost nobody wants to use or advertise on their cesspools of hate that they call social networks and Elon acquiring Twitter, however expensive for Elon (good), showed them what's possible by hitching themselves to something that many people find valuable and care for.

Let it also serve as a reminder that even plenty of us in the wider queer community are unable to quickly realize that we're dealing with an alt-right nyazi because many of us haven't been consistently subjected to their patterns of abuse and "befriending" they intentionally use with those that they know are not politically-aligned with them. I'm not attempting to excuse anything, but that seems a likely explanation. Hopefully now with this experience under their belt Kainoa/Firefish will be more cautious and try to background check thoroughly. The global alt-right movement is highly organized and coordinated and it's very unlikely that this was just a couple isolated dolts unconnected to the rest of them. Deception has become an important part of what they do and while many of them are
terrible at it they often attempt it.
Statement by @supakaity regarding the future of the #Hajkey fork of #Calckey #Firefish . It's becoming a downstream fork of #Iceshrimp #fediverse #FediverseSafety

A few people have asked us now about the future of Hajkey, given the recent changes with Calckey becoming Firefish and the Iceshrimp fork of that. So I thought I'd make a post, now that I can type again and let you know where we're at. I have been taking a small break from adding new features to Hajkey recently because my left arm has basically been useless for the last month after breaking it, but I'm now able to partially touch type again, and my arm is incrementally better each day. However my reticence with writing new code has been going on for a bit longer than that. I was in a dev chat room with a few devs, trying to pursuade that the safety of a minority group is paramount whilst trying to justify the addition of a new safety feature. I was tyring to make the point that a feature which may initially confuse some people is worth it if we protect just one minority person. I also tried (without luck) to address the (valid) concerns about how to implement the feature with minimal potential for confusion. However, I feel like while the majority of minority people present in the room agreed, my point was ultimately worn down and overruled by a single person who I feel didn't understand what such a feature would mean for the safety of those needing protection. I am ashamed to say that I felt a lot of disempowerment and lost a lot of forward momentum when that happened, questioning my own compass which said that I should push ahead, but pushing ahead without an implementation in other instances would make my new feature a non-starter. I don't see a lot of diverse fediverse projects around which focus on security features to protect the vulnerable or that have dev leads that have experience with existing in a society with a greatly diminished privileged status. This means that they are not as concious of the features that are important to us and other underprivileged or minority groups. I am proud to run one myself, and as a female and transgender person (and whilst acknowedging my own significant privilege), I think that gives me somewhat of a unique and valuable perspective, so it excites me to see that there's a new project (Iceshrimp) starting, focussing more on security and safety and less on flashy new sparkles and bling. I feel like this will ultimately be a good thing for the fediverse. In the FOSS world, diversity is, like in the real world, a fantastic thing. It drives innovation, allows greater choice, avoids stagnation, vendor siloing, narrow minded thinking and generally inproves the overall health of the entire ecosystem. So I congratulate @[email protected] on their new project. I'm looking forward to great things from Firefish and Iceshrimp, both of which are rich with diverse developers. While Firefish can focus on the flashy usability and experience tack, Iceshrimp can help fill the sorely needed safety aspects. The good features from both will help improve the quality of experience and ultimately our end users will benefit. As far as Hajkey is concerned, we'll still be our own fork, still doing our own little thing, but we will be directly downstream of Iceshrimp and will be pushing our changes back upstream to the 'shrimp. We made this choice as we feel that this project more closely aligns with our overall goals and has less focus on the commercial/sponsorship side of things which we are uncomfortable with. Also this way the trademark issue (while not a blocker for us) is something we don't have to worry about biting us in the future. We're also not planning a name change at this point. We like Hajkey as a name and don't currently see a compelling reason to change that.

The more I see the #fediverse culture change with the influx of redditors to Lemmy & Kbin more I wonder how long the microblogging side of things is safe from the encroachment of the reply guys et al even before Facebook Threads shows up. I follow Ada's BlĂĄhaj Lemmy account here and seeing the reply threads to one of her recent #Lemmy moderation decisions in my #Firefish timeline I wish most of these folks were siloed elsewhere.
@ada @shoq It's still only getting half of it right if #calckey is gonna be a voice for decentralisation of the #Fediverse but not for safety. There's a large conversation going on about marginalised folx and safety and most devs seem to be absent from following it, and the evangelists silent in raising it.

Let me point you to
my QT of part of just one of @[email protected] 's threads in case you've never seen them.

It's absolute privilege to be pushing the tech conversation with the bros while absent from the ones about
actually existing safety issues.

Moderators seem almost invisible at calckey.social for example, despite
@atomicpoet stressing moderation when allaying fears about QTs; it's often left to individual users to mention using CWs, and for the most part folx there aren't using them. That's taken a lot of the shine off for me tbh.

While I *really* disagree with @[email protected] attitude to centralisation, he's 150% right about the lack of action from those with the power to do so, to make the #Fediverse as it *actually exists* safer now, let alone at scale. Lots of apps, bling, demand for bird site features; but moderation seems to be getting more lax, and no roadmaps on what a safe decentralised #Fediverse could look like. The loudest voices are still talking about signups, not safety. And most of those who've spruiked moderation haven't delivered on their own servers.

So it seems the admin of mastodon.au & syd.social @[email protected] has nuked his account and syd.social server seems to be down. Only last week he was seeking sign ups for it too. #mastodonau #sydsocial #Mastodon #fediverse #Australia
