I really like the favorite/boost/bookmark distinctions. I also like the fact that here you have to go back to the original post to talk--my brain says lovechild of Twitter and Pillowfort. Also, accountability, woohoo!

So. In my view.

Favorite: HEY YOU this was a COOL THING.

Boost: HEY EVERYONE this was a COOL THING.

Bookmark: HEY ME don't forget about this COOL THING.

Reply: OMG WHAT A COOL THING can we TALK about it?

If you're joining Mastodon now, here's important advice:

1. Join a small instance
2. If you're part of a big instance, consider joining a small instance
3. If you have technical know-how, self-host your own instance
4. If for whatever reason you want to stay on a big instance, make your own back-up instance (like I have)

MOST IMPORTANTLY: If you don't know what an instance is, learn about it immediately.

I love Mastodon and I research search engines, so when we set up a mastodon instance at the University of Twente, we planned to research federated search, who-to-follow recommendations, and trending topics. Students worked on this in one of our courses:
