Looking forward to visiting the Dept of Chemical & Systems Biology at Stanford next week where I will be giving a series of talks and workshops! Happy to meet with folks interested in talking about animating molecules!

If he’s not tending to his own plants, he is out in nature looking for plants in their native habitat. Alex enjoys hiking and traveling. His best experience yet has been trekking through the Ecuadorian Amazon!

Thanks to Alex and Grace for this great collaboration!

In his free time Alex can be found tending to his plant collection. He is most interested in epiphytic and caudiciform plants. To Alex, it's more than just collecting the plant, he loves to research everything about them—especially the native habitats and ethnobotany.
For #SeeingDiversity we’re featuring Alex Stevens! As a grad student with Sam Reck-Peterson, Alex focuses on using evolutionary guided approaches with the Daugherty Lab to uncover novel conflicts btw viruses & the host intracellular trafficking machinery, illustrated here by Grace Hsu.
Beautiful illustration from postdoc Margot Riggi (@MargotRiggi on Twitter) depicting a cross-section of Asgard archaea with actin filaments within. Based on recently published work from the Pilhofer Lab: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05550-y
Actin cytoskeleton and complex cell architecture in an Asgard archaeon - Nature

Culture and analysis of ‘Candidatus Lokiarchaeum ossiferum’—a member of the Asgard phylum—reveals an elaborate cell architecture with extensive membranous protrusions.

@ColinHopkins Thank you so much! I'm so happy to know they've been useful.
@jhdcate Thanks, Jamie!
@mgruppo Do you mean the one in the middle row, 2nd from bottom? That's the motor protein kinesin (blue) walking along a microtubule (green) and dragging a vesicle (white).
@anbog
I use Autodesk Maya, but you could use any 3D animation software to create these (including Blender, Cinema4D, 3DS Max, etc). Blender is free and open source, and is probably what I would use if I were learning 3D animation today!
Krystle loves music: she’s been the lead singer of 3 bands & played with an all steeldrum band during grad school. The steeldrum is the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago, where it was invented & Krystle is originally from! Check this album she is on: http://www.dynamicmusic.com/caribbeanchristmascarnival.html (also on Spotify!)
