For #SeeingDiversity this month, meet Krystle McLaughlin, an Assistant Professor at Vassar! This illustration by Margot Riggi highlights Krystle’s working hypothesis of the step-wise assembly of the relaxosome, a multiprotein complex involved in bacterial plasmid conjugation.
Krystle’s lab solves microbial protein structures, using X-ray crystallography along with other biochemical & biophysical methods. She is also interested in best practices in science pedagogy, focusing on methods to improve retention of women & underrepresented groups.
Krystle loves music: she’s been the lead singer of 3 bands & played with an all steeldrum band during grad school. The steeldrum is the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago, where it was invented & Krystle is originally from! Check this album she is on: http://www.dynamicmusic.com/caribbeanchristmascarnival.html (also on Spotify!)
