For my US-based peeps, you need to know this:

I spent yesterday in an emergency room in Germany. Don't worry, I'm fine now. I didn't have travel insurance so I ended up having to pay everything on my own. I was there for several hours. I had a surgical consult with an ultrasound, saw two doctors, and took up a bed for several hours.

Guess what I paid.

€124.

This morning I walked to the pharmacy to pick up a week's supply of three drugs the doctor prescribed for me.

Guess what I paid.

€35.

Folks, the average cost of an emergency room visit in the US is over $2,000 and mine probably would not have been considered an average visit.
