I am having my first good, decent theory-oriented idea in literal years. There is limited likelihood much can come of it, but hey, my brain can still do that, which is nice to know.
Pretty huge news in the Texas journalism higher ed world. Dr. Kathleen McElroy, who was announced last month as the director of the new #journalism program at Texas A&M, has already departed after facing hostility from university leaders & conservative groups. Kathleen is excellent and deserves better. https://www.texastribune.org/2023/07/11/texas-a-m-kathleen-mcelroy-journalism/?utm_source=articleshare&utm_medium=social
Texas A&M recruited a UT professor to revive its journalism program, then backtracked after “DEI hysteria”

The university celebrated its decision to hire Kathleen McElroy to revive its journalism program. She says she’s staying at UT after she felt judged because of her race and gender.

Good morning to everybody but especially Anthony and Louis Maglione .

'Anthony and Louis Maglione were inseparable, and the brothers shared three passions: rooting for the Red Sox, investing in stocks, and watching their favorite shows on WGBH.... now that they have died and their financial affairs are settled, all their savings — $6 million between them — are going to the Boston public media outlet now known as GBH.'

Two brothers lived modestly and saved $6 million. They gave it all to GBH.

Anthony and Louis Maglione of Malden loved public television. Their posthumous donation is GBH’s biggest unrestricted gift ever.

I'm back!

I shouldn't have left.

The New York Times, for instance, had no problem describing Orbán’s crusade against “liberal” education as part of an authoritarian, nationalistic project. They’re definitely treating Florida Orbán differently, approaching him through a deliberately normalizing lens.

ChatGPT is only the most recent example of the tech industry's willful choice not to care very much, or soon enough, about the foreseeable negative consequences of what it produces. As the great Tom Lehrer once wrote: "'Once the rockets are up, who cares where they come down? That's not my department,' says Wernher von Braun."

The buzzy new AI tool can quickly create entire news organizations out of thin air. Should we be freaking out?

Big Journalism grossly downplayed the accomplishments of the Biden administration and Democratic-controlled Congress in 2021-22.

Now, Big Journalism is puzzled that the public isn't aware of those accomplishments.

(Not a hint of this in the Post story, of course...)

In partnership with the NC Local News Workshop at Elon University, CISLM's NC newsroom diversity audit report is out.

We didn't get the participation we hoped for, but we still learned a lot (particularly about things we'd do differently).

In addition to the CISLM research team's data analysis, we convened a panel of experts to review preliminary results, make recommendations, and help give shape to our report.

The whole package is here. https://www.cislm.org/research/ncdiversityaudit/

NC Diversity Audit | Center for Innovation & Sustainability in Local Media

Newsroom diversity has long been recognized as critical to the mission of local news. However, gathering an accurate understanding of diversity in newsrooms has proven a difficult undertaking due to low response rates. In 2022, Elon University's NC Local News Workshop and UNC's Center for Innovation and Sustainability in Local Media partnered on a diversity audit of North

Announcement about the list of comm & media scholars I've been maintaining with @bethanyklein: The Google Doc will continue to be maintained, but I’m also setting up a new version of the list compatible with the discovery tools that already allow folks to browse and search other lists of academics on Mastodon. Scholars need to opt into the new list to be included and can do so by following the handle @commodon.
