Thanks to @srfirehorseart we got an explanation from the artist about his painting.

_______

In case you were wondering about the figure with the paint roller

"Jonathan Harris: So, this figure right here, he represents the America trying to cover up our history."

"Any other historical figures down here, or stories, or things that happen, are covered up by America because it doesn’t make the kids feel good knowing what their ancestors were capable of and that’s not fair."

@MMRnmd I feel like I may be woefully ignorant, but do the stars on the shoulder have a specific reference, or is it emblematic of how the US keeps using them in symbolism? Damn that's a powerful piece.

@KayOhtie Hadn't noticed this, you're a good observer.

I must say I have no clue but makes sens since we also have the red of the shirt, the tiny bit of blue at the end of the shirt's sleeve and the white of the covering paint.
It might pretty well be on purpose.

@MMRnmd I wasn't sure if there was symbolism in the number of them (I can tell they're stars but they quickly blur too much to count them in the photo resolution) or not too

@KayOhtie Theshape of the stars reminds more of the EU flag, but the more I think about it the more I think you're right.

If he had copied the US flag design of the stars, it would have been like pre-chewing the symbol for the viewer.
As they are, they just slightly remind us of the US flag, up to you (or me) to interpret it our way according to our upbringing, culture or opinion : it means art.

@KayOhtie @MMRnmd I thought it was the fingers on the end of a hand, but I'm relieved to see that it is actually stars, because otherwise I was worrying there was something I didn't know about Tom Scott

@MMRnmd I tried to find out anything about the lady in the red shirt painting over black history. Specifically if the shirt and stars are representing something.

@MMRnmd good GD that's an emotional kicker. I of course know it's just a painting and it's the point but still the subconscious part of me that wants to scream, STOP! at the guy with the roller is intense.

Which I'm sure was exactly the point. Well fucking done, my man.

@srfirehorseart Thank you so much for this.

So we were kind of right when thinking these were stars on the sleeve holding the paint-roll.

This explains that.
