There’s an entire rant buried in here but, in short, I absolutely agree.

Shock Therapy was once used to cure patients. It always made the patient worse yet some 'experts' claimed the solution was even more shock therapy

Many economists now do the same saying the solution to Neo-Liberalism's decades of failure is even more Neo-Liberalism.

Hi again,

The level of input crap keeps increasing - both with and without the use of AI. We are now discussing completely dropping our bug-bounty as a means to perhaps slow down the flood.

We could really use some better tools from HackerOne to make it harder for slop to get filed.

Fun* thing I just noticed, the bulleted list markers in the Qantas "you got breached" email? 717kB PNG file.
@ireneista the fundamental problem with the theory that open source can be sponsored well by corporations is the fact that fundamentally the incentives are driven by private equity and an unhealthy disregard to any investment in meaningful security/privacy/system integrity. Rationally it would make sense, but we’re in a system driven by greed.
My mom was listening to a political podcast in Cantonese and it's hilarious to me that they just refer to MAGA as 愚蠢人 (stupid people)as a matter of course. They don't beat around the bush... they just call it as it is.

I am deeply disappointed in researchers who choose to include hidden instructions in paper submissions telling LLMs to give a positive review.

This shows an embarrassing lack of imagination. If I were submitting a paper, I’d tell the LLM to emit the review in the form of a limerick, or include a recipe involving fermented clam paste.

incredible

do you get to walk around with a flir?

fuck yes

yay i finished the first island :3

this game is incredibly engaging, especially for early access. the UI is a little janky, some of the mechanics are a _little_ too RSI-inducing, but on the whole? an incredible amount of fun. i spent way too long on the first island because i kind of just vibed with the grid, right? that kind of game

ps. nimbys suck

@whitequark hmm maybe I should try it again, last time I played it I reported a bunch of bugs and left...

Did they add simulation of grid frequency and the effect supply-demand imbalance has on it?

@whitequark

As someone who works in this industry, energy/utility infrastructure, I feel I really need to check this out! This all sounds really cool!

Also, yes, I agree, NIMBYs are the worst.

@whitequark oh geez, now only if we can hook this up to steam engine simulator for some reall power management hell.
@whitequark ooooh do they have a helicopter level where you have to fly the lines with the special UV corona camera https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsSXjFMHIuU
monitoring hot line washing with Ofil's corona camera

YouTube
@en4rab a little higher level than that sadly
@whitequark the first Catherine-type game
@SnoopJ it's like laser targeted at me
@whitequark how sure are we this isn't just like industry training software packaged as a game
@irina industry training software would never be this good!
@whitequark @irina moonbase alpha would like to disagree
@whitequark im speechless. like. oh my god it has complex impedance and reactive power and shit
@whitequark this game is like if factorio's grabbers had control loops you had to manually tune otherwise they won't work

@chfour @whitequark yeah I’m pretty sure this game is just what you get when a power engineer decides the best use of their time is making an indie game about doing their job

incredibly detailed mechanics turned into a game for people who might also like to be power engineers but never got the chance

@whitequark this game looks like a ton of fun
@astrid it IS
@whitequark @astrid i feel like half the fun of this would be causing new and exciting fault conditions
