Once again it’s IDAHOBIT - International Day Against Homophobia Biphobia and Transphobia, and I’d like to take a moment to explore what it looks like to be an ally.
1. Educate yourself. Read about what it means to be queer in all of its glorious rainbow forms. Read about what queer folks experience in the world.
2. Make sure you aren’t spreading misinformation like “3 years old is too young to know you’re trans” (it is not), “safe schools teaches gay sex” (it does not, it is about making schools safe for everyone), or “drag story time is inappropriate and sexual” (it’s not. it’s people dressed in glitter and rainbows reading stories to kids).
3. Call out bullying and misinformation when you see them. Stand with queer folks when they need you. If you hear someone spouting garbage, correct them.
It’s easy to consider ourselves allies because we have no problem with queer folks, but if we’re not active allies, we’re part of the problem. We need to make change.
