Frank Walter Buturla was born
#otd in Bridgeport, 1910 to a Polish American family. After returning to Poland briefly as a child, Frank and his family returned to the US. He joined the NMU and CPUSA and worked as a driver and sailor. He arrived in Spain on May 5, 1937.

Frank served with ALB until he was WIA at Brunete. He served with the John Brown Artillery Battery before he returned to the US on February 4, 1939. He worked as a sailor until he passed on January 22, 1948.

Anthony Toney was born
#otd in Gloversville, 1913. He graduated from Syracuse and joined the CPUSA in 1934. He worked for the WPA before he attended the École des Beaux-Arts. He arrived in Spain on April 27, 1938 and served with ALB until he was WIA in the jaw in September 1938.

Anthony returned to the US on December 20, 1938. He had his first show at the Wakefield Gallery in NYC, 1941. He served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII. He married Edna Greenfield on April 7, 1947. He got a PhD from the Columbia and taught at the New School from 1952-1995.

Anthony wrote two books on art: Creative Painting and Drawing (1968), with an updated version Painting and Drawing (1978). He passed on September 10, 2004. His family cataloged his 80 years of art online.

There’s nowhere a consumer or employer can go to look up all insurers’ denial rates.

Federal and state regulators have done little to change that.

John Russell Trescott Trcka was born
#otd in Calumet City, 1916. He was an engineering student at Purdue University when he joined the CPUSA in 1936. He sailed for Spain on January 20, 1937 and served in ALB as a group leader. He was WIA in Brunete with a bullet through his jaw.

John returned to the US on October 17, 1937. He attended the first VALB conference in February 1938. He married Anne Kewak on December 21, 1939. They settled in LA, where he passed on March 16, 1998.

Bonus Brigadista of the Day:

Edward Bender was born
#otd in Mogilev, 1906. He immigrated to the US in 1920 and joined the CPUSA in 1925. He worked at a mattress factory before he arrived in Spain in March 1937. He served with ALB as Chief of Cadres Services before he returned to the US in December 1937.

Edward married Marion Dvorkin Davis on February 21, 1940. He served in the US Army during WWII and later worked in dry cleaning. He also continued his activism and helped integrate his co-op in NYC. He moved to CA in 1973 and led the Bay Area VALB. He passed on April 8, 1996.

Daniel Bede Taylor was born
#otd in Hattiesburg, 1910. His family lived in Chicago by 1920. He was unemployed before he arrived in Spain on June 10, 1938. He served with ALB and was WIA by July 30, 1938. He was hospitalized until he returned to the US on December 15, 1938.

Daniel married Minnie Ora Brown before he served in the US Army during WWII. He lived and worked in Chicago until he passed on November 25, 1982.
