Non-Ruby-related rant.

My non-obsolete-but-old iPhone needs a new battery. Tried an "Apple Authorized Service Provider" and they only do drop-off service. Made a Genius Bar appointment and discovered that, even though I sent Apple the diagnostics that they requested, there is no guarantee that a replacement battery will be in stock when I show up for my appointment. While not ridiculous, the one-hour round-trip is annoying and now I'll likely have to do it twice.

This is bad. Mastodon instances need tooling to automatically detect and ban abuse (or flag for manual review), and to automatically defederate from instances that don’t ban abuse https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/07/24/twitter-rival-mastodon-rife-with-child-abuse-material-study-finds/

@st0012 Might I suggest, if you ever are in Glasgow, visiting the Curler's Rest? Maybe as your 300th? :-)

@paigerduty Stadium Love!

As anyone who has written code that needs to run in real-time and that relies on data from a computer vision system knows, other sensors are needed for a variety of reasons, with redundancy being the most obvious one.

And don't get me started on relying on human-labeled-on-a-timer images or the trial-and-error training of neural nets on public roads.

Again, SYSTEMIC BS... "At the center of this is blood quantum, the system imposed by the U.S. government to determine tribal membership."

Red Lake considers a future without blood quantum

A new study finds Red Lake’s population will plunge in coming years under the current rules which are governed by blood quantum. However, changing the rules might also bring about a population explosion.

Did politics cut 'systemic' from AP African American studies plan?

A senior College Board official now acknowledges the organization was mindful of how “systemic" and certain other words in the modern lexicon of race in America would receive intense scrutiny in some place.

@pbump I disagree. Gen Z is perfectly fine, just like Gen X, and much better than pegging them to all the bad years they’ve had to endure.
