I've been in and out of information security professionally, but somehow always have related projects. Mainly working with zeek and network level detection at the moment. SDR, cycling, and climbing enthusiast.

I boost a lot. Topics range far and wide from security and "the cybers" and may include politics, food, humor, science, law, nature, art, and other sundry unsavories. I occasionally post my own projects and thoughts.

Asylum seekers in Oregon can now qualify for in-state tuition

A new law signed this week allows eligible asylum seekers to receive resident tuition rates at Oregon’s public universities. This comes as the Trump administration is taking a harder line on immigrants and international students.

Grok stops posting text after flood of antisemitism and Hitler praise

X users observed Grok celebrating Adolf Hitler and making other antisemitic posts, and owner xAI now says it’s “actively working to remove” what it calls “inappropriate posts.”

CNN with some (good) questions...

"...
What actions did Kerr County officials take to warn residents about the potential “considerable” flood threat?

Why wasn’t there an organized evacuation effort there in the three hours or so between the dire flood warning from the National Weather Service and the time the river overflowed its banks?

Why did some nearby communities (such as Comfort in Kendall County) seem to act on the same weather information in a more serious way?

Did Camp Mystic have a flood emergency plan and weather emergency radios and were they used during the flooding?
...."

That’s my question too, why didn’t they have first responders out with sirens blaring, loud speakers going after the NWS warnings.
@ai6yr These are good questions, and need to be asked and answered while there is still public attention on it. People keep pointing out the lack of the NWS position that coordinates with local entities, which would have been helpful and probably always happened before. BUT ultimately, isn't it the responsibility of state and local entities to act on that federal warning? It seems other City/Counties acted...

@ai6yr

* Why are we building camps and stuff in a flood plain in the first place?

@troy_frizzell @ai6yr
Yeah. The Camp Mystic cabins for the youngest kids in the floodway by the river were elevated a bit (5-6 stairs), so they wouldn't flood every time it rained. But once the flooding started, the kids would have been trapped, with rapidly rising water all around and an intense current.

Based on photos of the aftermath, the high-water mark hit the eaves of those cabins.

@ai6yr why were armed men in camouflage uniforms with bullet proof vests marching through MacArthur Park today? Is it an attention-getting manipulation to draw scrutiny away from the Texas floods?
@ai6yr I wonder why it’s the volunteers and even the Mexican Volunteers (from Mexico) looking for the missing and rescuing, and not the TX Nat Guard? Oh yeah, they’re busy parading at the border, to you know, protect the citizens from… immigrants.
