I boost leftist stuff. I work in tech but jeez. Video games. D&D. Art and creatives. Trans rights are human rights. Black lives matter.

“People in northern Gaza have been forced to survive on an average of 245 calories a day - less than a can of beans - since January, as Israeli forces continue their military onslaught. Over 300,000 people are believed to still be trapped there, unable to leave.” - Oxfam

I'm really hoping you don't need me to tell you that using machine learning ("AI") systems to identify potential targets and then to suggest that they be targeted when at home with their family members, including children, is one of the most abhorrent, unethical, inhumane things I've ever seen. There is absolutely no excuse for developing these systems. Technology is never neutral. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/apr/03/israel-gaza-ai-database-hamas-airstrikes
‘The machine did it coldly’: Israel used AI to identify 37,000 Hamas targets

Israeli intelligence sources reveal use of ‘Lavender’ system in Gaza war and claim permission given to kill civilians in pursuit of low-ranking militants

The CEO of Barnes and Noble personally came in to try and convince workers not to unionize at the nation’s largest store in New York.

Instead, they voted 76-2 in favor of forming a union.

Workers know they’re worth more, and that unionizing can close the gap between what they’re really worth and what they’re getting — whether the CEO likes it or not

Believe it or not, the tiny little quotation marks in this #WashingtonPost headline are a HUGE deal.
It's a dramatic change that a paper like the Post is willing to question the pro #Israel narrative in a headline like this.
They could have just left the "'unintentional'" off the headline entirely. Including it, with the quotes, is an expression of doubt and skepticism.

I have a lot more to say, but I'll hold it for now and simply wonder aloud...

Which BigTech clouds are the "Lavender" & "Where's Daddy?" AI systems running on? What APIs are they using? Which libraries are they calling?

What work did my former colleagues, did I, did *you* contribute to that may now be enabling this automated slaughter?

(Also, content warning. This is some of the sickest shit I've ever read.)

‘Lavender’: The AI machine directing Israel’s bombing spree in Gaza

The Israeli army has marked tens of thousands of Gazans as suspects for assassination, using an AI targeting system with little human oversight and a permissive policy for casualties, +972 and Local Call reveal.

Jesus Christ, this is utterly horrific:

During the early weeks of the war they were permitted to kill 15 or 20 civilians during airstrikes on low-ranking militants. Attacks on such targets were typically carried out using unguided munitions known as “dumb bombs”, the sources said, destroying entire homes and killing all their occupants.

“You don’t want to waste expensive bombs on unimportant people" said one intelligence officer.

It was just an accident that they bombed every single hospital.

It was just an accident that they bombed universities, libraries and museums.

It was just an accident that they completely desecrated multiple cemeteries.

It was just an accident that they bombed starving people queueing for flour.

It was just an accident that they left Palestinian preemies in incubators to die.

It was just an accident that they killed 77 journalists.

It was just an accident that they killed Shireen Abu Akleh.

World Central Kitchen is devastated to confirm seven members of our team have been killed in an IDF strike in Gaza.

Despite coordinating movements with the IDF, the convoy was hit

This is not only an attack against WCK, this is an attack on humanitarian organizations showing up in the most dire of situations where food is being used as a weapon of war. This is unforgivable

The seven killed are from Australia, Poland, UK, US, Canada, and Palestine.

Two weeks ago, a build of Mastodon's Web interface removed two features which impacted me, other power users and some folks with accessibility issues.

And many of us complained 'cause, well, it kinda sucked.

But @renchap and the developers listened to us! And they didn't just back out those changes. No, they restored the functionality integrated with other new features.

So, I wanted to publicly thank them for all that hard work and landing it last week. Y'all rock! 💖
