Did you know: The annual cost of burglary, robbery, larceny, & auto theft COMBINED is $14B—but the annual cost of wage theft by employers exploiting workers is $50B?

Remember this when media or politicians cite crime but ignore the most costly crime of all—corporate wage theft.

The fun thing about doing historical research as an individual unconnected with academia is the absolute constellation of different, ridiculously expensive paywalls you run into trying to get any info whatsoever
John Cleese is kinda right: the Loretta scene in Life of Brian surprisingly isn’t offensive (to me at least). It is actually somewhat good trans representation, especially for the time. Loretta states her desires very matter of factly, her and her friends have a realistic discussion about what it means and although they struggle to understand her, they end up pretty quickly accepting her, even immediately apologising for accidentally misgendering her.

I’m not concerned about AI outcompeting competent writers or impacting my career directly. I am deeply concerned about AI swamping submission systems and destroying the ability of editors and readers to find the next generation of writers.

AI is very much a danger to the long term health of the field not because of competition for quality readable fiction but because of its ability to create dreck in previously unimaginable quantities and drown submission systems and indie publishing in shit.

I’ve been thinking for a little while now that we should be talking about “body type” instead of “sex”. It gets down more into the specifics of anatomy and doesn’t have the misinformation or cultural baggage that is associated with our idea of sex. The only issue: I don’t know any terminology we could use to answer “what body type do you have” without referring back to sex.

What are yall’s thoughts?

Montana Republicans voted to ban Rep. Zooey Zephyr

Why? She made the GOP feel bad when she called them out for “blood on their hands” for their war on transgender rights

The GOP learned from their mistake with the Justins in TN…

Instead of being expelled, Zooey is still seated remotely and disallowed from debates

Her constituents will not have representation until her term is up

Christian fascism.

One of the many reasons I prefer mastodon over twitter. I put stuff here coz I think it’s interesting and I think other humans might like to see it. A lot of people use twitter (myself included back in the day) because they want to go viral. To feel the warm light of the unknowable, all powerful algorithm upon them. Before that same heat then melts off their skin, as they are swarmed by millions of shitty replies from people who are also clawing desperately for a taste of the algorithm’s light.

And of course capitalism is the main issue here. People wouldn’t be creating shit they hate to appease a machine if they didn’t want to get to google’s 1st page. If it wasn’t a futile attempt to monetise their thoughts.

And it’s not just google. Every algorithm driven service is like that. Twitter, tiktok, youtube, etc. You start off thinking the algorithm is working for you, but eventually you realise it’s in charge. Milking you for engagement metrics the shareholders can show to advertisers.

All the jokes about how when you google a recipe and there’s a novella about the author’s relationship to it are kinda shitty.

Do you know WHY this happens? SEO. Google isn’t going to boost a page that’s just a list of instructions. The algorithm doesn’t like that. It’s been tuned to boost *content*, and a straight up recipe is not that.

We made machines to find things we like, but then started making things for them instead of us. The internet is more for them now, and we’ve become obsolete.
