I know people like to make fun of niche operating systems, but for the five years I was at Microsoft I used Windows (10 then 11) as my daily driver. It’s much less stable than a professional OS, but it does kind-of work. I wouldn’t say it’s ready for the desktop. The UI is inconsistent and changes randomly between releases, a load of common software is basically useable only in a VM, it lags and freezes periodically (unlike an OS designed for interactive use, random drivers run a load of things directly in interrupt handlers, so you get latency spikes that you wouldn’t see in a more mainstream desktop OS) and the update process can hose the system, so it’s mostly of interest to people who like tinkering with their machines than people who actually want to get work done. Oh and a load of random bits of the OS have ads, but that’s what you get from a free ad-supported system instead of one developed by an active open-source community.

I don’t think I’d recommend anyone use it as their daily driver or in a work setting, but it’s not totally unusable. It’s not at the level of maturity than you’d expect from, say, Linux or FreeBSD, especially not for client workloads. If you do have to use it, I recommend that you install FreeBSD in a Hyper-V VM for real work. That’s what I did and it works quite well.

Open source and community project maintainers (and contributors) need to work hard on patience, empathy, and humility. It was something that took me a while, and even now after ~20+ years in the space, I can fail at those values at times. I know I've not always been the best at these things, and I still strive to learn.

Arrogance is neither sexy or cool. You need to meet people where they area, and show up, sometimes even in person. One of the reasons that I've valued meetups and events.

Conversation I had recently:

him: my train was delayed for 15 minutes by a hobo.
me: how so?
him: the police had to come to get him off the train.
me: whoa, what did he do?
him: he was sleeping on the train.
me: and not bothering anyone?
him: no
me: so the police came to drag a sleeping man off the train, even though he wasn't bothering anyone, just sleeping?
him: yes
me: why?
him: we thought that he might not have a ticket.
me: So a man, who you thought may be experiencing homelessness, was sleeping on the train, other passengers thought that he might not have a ticket, and called the police, who dragged him off the train? And that caused a 15-minute delay? Seems to me like it wasn't the sleeping man who caused the 15-minute delay?
him: ???

Just now, the gates were broken, so I couldn't scan my public transport card. Went out of my way to scan it at a different station, almost missing my connection.

Train conductor just checked our tickets. Young white dude next to me hadn't scanned his card. Conductor tells him to "remember" next time, even though you have to practically break through the gate to get into the station without scanning your card.

Guess we have different rules for different people here. Also I'm low-key annoyed with my own honesty and integrity. Could've saved myself 8 euros and a sprint for the train today.

1. Use a different browser.
2. Install cookie blockers.
3. Explain to friends and family who just use default apps and settings because they know no better.
4. Repeat step 3 over and over...

one of my favorite things to see near where I live is the seasonal ice cream stands that serve pup cups to their canine customers.

Doggos are always so amazed that a li'l cup of vanilla ice cream with a dog biscuit is a thing that exists in the world.

Saw some text online that made me want to turn it into signage. What good are graphic design skills if you can't have a little fun with them.😜

Odin pupdate!

He is now 16 weeks / 4 months old. In a few days he'll have officially lived with us for longer than he did where he was born.

Odin is recovered from his illness, but apparently we live in a real hotspot for it and we've been warned to expect it to recur. He was also very bad and attempted to abscond from a bucket bike while it was moving. We still have one whole dog and one whole bike but hopefully he's learned why that's not a good plan

Odin is a newfoundlander, he is going to get much, much bigger
