The older I get, the more aware I am that being critical rather than enjoying things is not a sign of intelligence or wisdom. Not loving things - movies, art, music, people, situations - because of their weaknesses doesn't make you better than them, it means you're unable to see past imperfections. Sure, some things absolutely are bad & should be left behind - but being hypercritical denies you joy. I need reminded of this every day. Too many things are legit bad to throw out good ones too.
@carnage4life @Gargron The incentives for VCs are pretty much the opposite of what the fediverse stands for. “Investment” in Mastodon is simply control of the most popular system and service, and IMO shows a lack of understanding by the GPs into what Mastodon really is.
@TradingPlacesResearch Those “investment offers” come with a VC on your board and them owning a portion of your company. Feels antithetical to the fediverse experience.
@rbreich Wishful thinking on so many levels and empty rhetoric for the sake of it. Power doesn’t listen to what you ethically want to happen; it listens to something stronger. There is no consequence for him and thus he will do whatever he wants.
@d3cline You’re being tough on yourself in stating you have no impact. Impact cascades, and as long as you’re interacting with others, you are having impact. Keep on keeping on. This conversation alone shows you are having some somewhere.
@d3cline Reminds me of a quote from Nietszche’s _Thus Spake Zarathustra_: “One repays a teacher badly if one always remains nothing but a pupil.”
@ilrihw @breadandcircuses This subject is described at length in James C. Scott’s “Seeing Like A State”, as well. See https://archive.nytimes.com/www.nytimes.com/books/first/s/scott-state.html
Seeing Like a State

@carnage4life @d3cline The way this has historically been handled is exactly at the hosting level, though, in which abuse takedowns for a domain are sent to the host for resolution, and using the hosting model, moderation/regulation would fall to the individual instance. Forums/message boards are proto-social media and have followed this model. e.g. EU DSA requires 45MM+ users; will they consider an entire network the service? Most regulatory action I’m aware of is tailored to a few actors.

@carnage4life there's been state-level political momentum on government devices, so doing it was low risk.

do i use tiktok currently? yes; a substantial amount of pop culture is spawned therein. should it probably be restricted in america? yes. china is restricting american tech media companies, so why should we not reciprocate?

@alex +1. the security industry frequently deals with controversial subjects that are often trauma-inducing for their victims. you need some base resilience, yes, but you also need a place to build it through progressive, safe exposure. these guidelines restrict that development and it is as required for a career in casually gazing into the abyss as abstract technical knowledge.
