Glad to see @Gargron turning down VC funding for Mastodon. The #1 thing VCs like to see is rapid growth and that’s the one thing that would kill Mastodon.

I have a better set of interactions here with 5,000 followers than on Twitter with over 100K followers. But I also realize that’s partially due to the niche nature of the service.

The service is also currently not designed for policing that scale of usage.

Client Challenge

@carnage4life @Gargron any time VC vultures get involved bad things happen.. If you can avoid those parasites you best do it
@carnage4life Think about it: personally, Eugen could just take the money and get himself made for life. But VCs weren't counting on his integrity and the general ethos of this network. If there's anything the last decades of Internet taught us, is that money and greed is what ends up poisoning even the most altruistic projects. It is on our best interests as users to keep it that way via consistent self-funding.
Twitter rival Mastodon rejects funding to preserve nonprofit status

Open source microblogging site has seen surge of interest since Musk took over Twitter.

Ars Technica
@carnage4life @Gargron The incentives for VCs are pretty much the opposite of what the fediverse stands for. “Investment” in Mastodon is simply control of the most popular system and service, and IMO shows a lack of understanding by the GPs into what Mastodon really is.
