Given everything happening right now, I updated this article with options for weather apps, web forms, and translation services — along with some tweaks to existing categories.

I hope it helps your transition off US tech!

Getting off US tech: a guide

I’m in the process of dropping US tech services. Here’s how I did it, and options you should consider.

Stages of realizing how good Material Maker has gotten in the last few years https://rodzilla.itch.io/material-maker

You heard of the recent branch prediction vulnerability, right? https://comsec.ethz.ch/research/microarch/branch-privilege-injection/

I just checked if my Debian 12 stable server with unattended-upgrades had picked up this security fix and the answer is… no!

Why? Because the intel-microcode package moved from the non-free to the non-free-firmware section of the archive, and that was not even enabled in my sources.list!

And even afterwards, I had to explicitly `apt install intel-microcode`

So double-check that your servers are fixed!

After long 3 months of work, I'm glad to release niri v25.05 with the Overview, screenshot UI tablet and touch support, dynamic screencast target and windowed fullscreen, IPC pick-window and pick-color, window urgency, and lots of other things!

Release notes prepared for your reading pleasure as always: https://github.com/YaLTeR/niri/releases/tag/v25.05

I've bounced off using Vim motions / key binds *everywhere* (I use them over SSH, by necessity) a number of times in the last few years, but @noboilerplate has given the most compelling arguments I've thus far seen to keep persisting. The video also includes some super useful resources, so I would recommend watching if you're on the fence.

Maybe there isn't A Tipping Point, but several. Like milestones on the long road to freedom. I've just reached one.

Today Melissa Lewis over on BlueSky pointed out that the font used in the infamous "You wouldn't steal a car" anti-piracy campaign was actually designed by Just van Rossum, whose brother, Guido, created the Python programming language (bsky.app/profile/melissa.news/post/3ln7hx5rhcj2v)

She also pointed out that the font had been cloned and released illegally for free under the name "XBAND Rough". Naturally, it would be hilarious if the anti-piracy campaign actually turned out to have used this pirated font, so I went sleuthing and quickly found a PDF from the campaign site with the font embedded (
web.archive.org/web/20051223202935/http://www.piracyisacrime.com:80/press/pdfs/150605_8PP_brochure.pdf).

So I chucked it into FontForge and yep, turns out the campaign used a pirated font the entire time!
