@marcedwards I never used autolayout, but I don't think layout is the most critical part of a UI framework at all — 98% of the layouts in my apps are done by hand in -layoutSubviews et al. UIKit is the most-correct thing out there (it was ā€˜AppKit 2.0’ after all), and I wish Apple had built an 'AppKit 3.0' to bridge all the platforms. Autolayout and late-era Interface Builder poisoned the well and drove people to yearn for something like SwiftUI, but both are unnecessary and completely optional

Apple under Jobs was a design company. Apple under Cook is not. The difference is stark.

At best, Apple is coasting on decades-old designs; at worst, Apple is wrecking those designs. Jobs had an eye for UI details, whereas Cook doesn’t care about that, and his ā€œleadershipā€ has infected the entire company.

Jobs was far from perfect, but there’s so much shit Apple ships today that Jobs would call half-baked garbage. https://mastodon.social/@daringfireball/113148867549129796

The products themselves are fine, it's Apple as a company that leaves an increasingly bitter taste in my mouth.

Throwback to a cute little feature I mocked up in 2009: MobileMe Home, a way to connect with your home network. (Oh man, the days of fitting a whole icon in 16Ɨ16 pixels)

Does anyone remember how cute the Just Landed app was? I think it went offline in 2016 but around 2012 (?) and 2014, it was so awesome! I loved the animations and the cartoonish images depicting the current status.

Don’t get me wrong, I looooove Flighty, but I felt the UX of Just Landed was sooooo good!

Some days I just want to go back to Mavericks

You can see how a pill shape count-badge keeps everything much more uniform... it used to be like this but @sandropennisi's new gorgeous app has them too (and his app looks so, so nice with them).
