@freakboy3742 I wonder if it's indicative of some sort of stockholm-syndrome like effect that when I wrote about this — https://blog.glyph.im/2023/03/telemetry-is-not-your-enemy.html — I didn't even *consider* the mental health of maintainers. All I wanted was to be allowed to serve users better, for free, without getting yelled at!
Telemetry Is Not Your Enemy

Not all data collection is the same, and not all of it is bad.

"Wikipedia still can't be sold," says the headline on the donation page. Which also means it can't be bought and wrecked by fascist oligarchs.

It's an Internet treasure, and it's under attack from some of the world's worst people. Elon Musk's vicious denunciation of this irreplaceable resource would be shameful for someone who had an ounce of shame.

This is one of most important donations I make each year. I hope you'll join me in supporting Wikipedia.

This post from @pluralistic
is honestly up there with his concept of enshitification in the degree to which it explains so much of the shitshow.

It implies a compelling argument against great inequity. Namely that great wealth creates a bubble of affordance that insulates the rich from discerning the immediate consequences of incorrect or damaging notions or actions so delaying recognition of errors and the need to alter course.

It was a huge chore trying to find non-extreme Republicans.

Ironically, the biggest beneficiaries of affirmative action in media are Republican commentators. The MSM are desperate to find any who can engage in civil dialogue without fillibustering or collapsing into bigoted rants.

This is why you often see the same Republicans everywhere.

"Teaching (broadly defined as “costly information donation” from tutor to pupil)" --> you gotta love how evo people describe things lmao

Realized that my talk on Developer Thriving and the Psychology of Innovation, at the 2024 virtual Bridges Summit, has been posted by organizers here:

I published a new report that shows how today's cybersecurity and risk profiling systems are turning into employee mass surveillance and predictive policing tools.

Based on log, device and network data,
they let companies monitor almost everything employees do or say.

We need a serious debate about what is necessary and proportionate for what purpose and about safeguards that prevent misuse.

My 76-page report focusing on software from Forcepoint/Everfox and Microsoft:

I don't know who to credit for this but it's perfect

“There is this prevailing narrative – and a lot of it is being pushed by the fossil fuel industry and their enablers – that climate action is too difficult, it’s too expensive” Selwin Hart (UN)

What was doubted years ago was willed into regulation by collective action. Potential of political will is huge, thus it is undermined strategically. Knowing that hopelessness was (and is) brought to us by the merchants of doubt of Big Oil, can immunise and stoke our ambition.
