This would be a good time to remind everyone: I curate a reading list for the Palestinian speculative. It includes all genres, lots of forms, and links to where you can read them for free, or purchase copies when available.

Let's keep in touch & take care. 💕

Something that helps me remember the difference between CWing sensitive content on Twitter (e.g. violence) and the more liberal use of it on mastodon is to consider “doomscrolling”. Some people don’t want to be doing that and they can always click and reveal if they do

I wouldn’t CW a news article on Twitter but it would be the right thing for people to do on mastodon. Your toot might just be on a niche topic you know a lot of people are sick of seeing like a sport or a specific politician

Platforms like #Twitter, #Facebook, #LinkedIn etc are all business that NEED to grow since we, the user are the products.

Revenue should not be a goal of a social platform, there are enough websites out there already who squeeze you for every penny in some form.

The internet wasn't created for profit alone but it seems many have forgotten..

Let's bring that back!

One thing that was super common on Mastodon / Fediverse prior to this mass migration was adding image descriptions to help be accessible to our many blind and partially sighted users here. Many people won't boost posts without them.
Please consider adding alt text to your images when you can.

Some things to do from the beginning as we develop a community.

1. Add alt text to your images. It allows ppl with screen readers to access your pictures.

2. Include capitals in multi word hashtags. Again, for functionality of screen readers.

3. Don’t add multiple emojis throughout your text. Screen readers read each one out individually. Image what that’s like if you put a clapping emoji after every word.

Reply if you know of others. I'd like to learn too.

Over on twitter I muted people who posted content about politics because I didn't want that on my timeline. We are lucky to have easy access to insert content warnings on this platform. I would encourage others to use this tool. I can cite the research on content warnings, if needed, but just know that it does have a positive effect on the community. Please be thoughtful about what you post and how you post it. Thank you. 🙏
Gentle reminder that when you post screenshots of posts by toxic people, it bypasses filters that some of us are trying to set, to make this place a refuge from that nonsense. Also recommend using the CW function.

Considering what instance (if any) to switch to, but my experience of any dedicated science or queer or feminist or climate activism space is that it’s unpleasantly colonial and therefore exhausting.

That said, any recommendations?
