San Francisco bureau chief for the New York Times. Former SF Chronicle columnist and co-host of #TotalSF podcast; public transit fan

I love this last bit of the first NYT byline from @heatherknight (I also am OK!).

#SanFrancisco

In New York City, speeding has dropped by 73% where speed safety cameras are used. This tool will save lives in California.

@cagovernor @gavinnewsom we are asking you to sign AB645, the speed safety camera bill on your desk.

TY @heatherknight for this coverage: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/07/us/california-speed-cameras-pedestrians.html

With gratitude to Liz Chavez and George Quiroz for your heroic advocacy after your family's unthinkable loss.

❤️‍🩹 With Aileen in our hearts.

California Could Install Speed Cameras as Pedestrian Deaths Spike

A bill to install cameras has landed on the governor’s desk at a moment when pedestrian deaths are spiking nationwide.

Total SF

A San Francisco culture podcast featuring celebrity guests, non-celebrity guests, personalities from the San Francisco Chronicle and a celebration of Bay Area life. Hosted by culture critic Peter Hartlaub and columnist Heather Knight and recorded on the streets, hilltops, parks and landmarks of San Francisco. The pair's focus on the whimsy and wonder of San Francisco began in 2018 when they rode every bus, train, cable car and street car in the city in one day. They believe in highlighting the eccentric characters, independent bookstores, burger joints and bars that make the bay so great.

My latest column: San Franciscans have long assumed the SFMTA prioritizes revenue over safety in its parking tickets — and now there’s data to back that up. Of the agency’s 1.2 million tickets a year, 92% have nothing to do with safety. https://www.sfchronicle.com/sf/bayarea/heatherknight/article/parking-tickets-18106566.php
Why most SF parking tickets don’t go to dangerous drivers

Data shows San Francisco officials prioritize revenue over safety in deciding when to slap drivers with fines for dangerous parking.

“Of the 1.2 million tickets the SFMTA writes every year, 92% are issued for behavior that doesn’t affect public safety, including staying too long at meters and not moving for street cleaning trucks.” @heatherknight @braitsch https://www.sfchronicle.com/sf/bayarea/heatherknight/article/parking-tickets-18106566.php

Shocking article https://www.sfchronicle.com/sf/bayarea/heatherknight/article/city-politics-democrat-18073621.php

The whole school board debacle was revealing (to me) in terms of how a small group of ideologically pure Democrats manage participation (with demonstrably destructive outcomes at least in the case of the school district). This is why I won't touch a candidate promoted by the democratic central committee, even though I vote reliably Democrat. Props to @heatherknight for covering this.

Who counts as a real Dem in S.F.? Infighting on left hits new lows

S.F. families wanted to form a new Democratic club. Then the wild accusations began to fly.
