Easy to miss in Mastodon's latest update, but the most-requested features are indeed coming "soon:"

"...quote posts, improved content and profile search, and groups. We’re also continuously working on improving content and profile discovery, onboarding, and of course our extensive set of moderation tools, as well as removing friction from decentralized features. Keep a lookout for these updates soon."

A new onboarding experience on Mastodon

Today we’re making signing up on Mastodon easier than ever before. We understand that deciding which Mastodon service provider to kick off your experience with can be confusing. We know this is a completely new concept for many people, since traditionally the platform and the service provider are one and the same. This choice is what makes Mastodon different from existing social networks, but it also presents a unique onboarding challenge. To make this step easier, we now have a default sign-up option that works with a server we operate. If you wish to leave or join a different server, you can do so at any time.

@adipolak Thank you so much!
@adipolak Bluesky seems promising, but I don’t have an invite so I will have to wait.
@Malik @warmapper Definitely not your issue. A lot of people go to Twitter for news, so unless most journalists/content providers leave, most people will complain and still stay there. Unfortunately, Mastodon’s UI is another issue. The lack of a good recommendation algorithm also hurts engagement.

Twitter will absolutely 100% continue to follow this pattern of arbitrary, emotional, and societally impactful content suppression as long as you give them the power to get away with it, even for 24 hours. I don’t know why people have any illusion it’s otherwise.

It’s why I left. It’s why I refuse to give them that power over me, even for a minute.

Twitter is limiting functionality for any tweets that link to Substack URLs. This comes just days after Substack rolled out Notes, a product that could compete with Twitter.

Musk appears to be making Twitter worse for users to enact retribution against potential competitors.

Equatorial Guinea's 1st outbreak of #Marburg continues to grow, spreading over a wide geographic area with potentially undetected chains of transmission, @WHO said.

Equatorial Guinea reported 9 confirmed cases, with 7 confirmed deaths since early February. https://arstechnica.com/science/2023/03/marburg-outbreak-grows-with-concerning-geographic-spread-in-equatorial-guinea/

Marburg outbreak grows with concerning geographic spread in Equatorial Guinea

WHO said Equatorial Guinea is not reporting some confirmed cases, delaying responses.

@AlisonCreekside @ct_bergstrom I recently switched to “following” as my default. It really improves the quality of the tweets I see. However, it’s impossible to go through all the tweets when I follow almost 1000 people and I end up missing many insightful tweets (unless I switch back to “for you” tab). I miss the old Twitter.
