That being said, it isn't the holy grail and requires a certain skill level to set it up properly and securely. I dedicate a part of my time helping others out, to achieve this - on forums, IRC, IRL, etc. It is a proper way to give back.

If a state actor is in your threat model, it is game over either way. That does not mean we shouldn't raise the bar as high as we can, protect our privacy and data. For other, less resourceful actors, self hosting is a powerful method. Especially against private entities.

I guess so. Mastodon does an awesome job at replacing Twitter. The more quality, decentralized alternatives we have to privacy-invading centralized services, the better.
It is a difficult discussion. The people close to me, care about privacy. Unfortunately, that doesn't represent others.
I've setup decentralized services (like NextCloud, Searx, hosting) - that I offer to beloved ones for free. For me, it is more important that their privacy is respected than my earnings.

@drwho
We shouldn't compete if the endgame is taking back privacy. Nor should we force products and services on users, but rather educate them so they can make their own choice.
Misinformation, FUD and fanboyism only has losers in the long run.

[Opinion] A part of me wants to embrace piracy - for many reasons, just not because i don't want to pay.
° Artists don't get paid what they deserve. Out of every sold album, a really small part goes to the artist - an insane high percentage ends up with the labels/managers.
° Netflix / Spotify are crap, content available now might be gone in a few weeks.
° DRM is a total privacy invasion.
° Etc
Yet, laws prohibit making a personal copy if it means that protections must be circumvented.
