I investigate problems of #paleoclimate from the ‘ground up’ by reconstructing patterns of past #glacier changes around the world. By probing the #climatedynamics of the glacial world, we may gain insight into how the system might reorganize as the planet warms.

It's November and today, the temperature reached 30⁰C (86F) in Japan. Never recorded before, this late in the year.

New paper:

This is an excellent interview with #UMaineECS Prof. George Denton about placing our understanding of the #Antarctic and global #ClimateChange into the context of the observations made by the early explorers.

George was my Ph.D. advisor and I have been lucky to work closely with him ever since.

Climate Insights from Antarctica: Exclusive Interview with George Denton

An interview with George Denton, one of the most accomplished climate scientists of our time, who along with sharing his expertise on climate change, talks about some of fascinating people he has met during his lifetime, many with direct links to the heroic explorers

There's a new paper on the increased risk that a wavier jet stream in a warmer wold will result in simultaneous crop failures in multiple major grain-producing regions:

Kai Kornhuber, the lead author, unfortunately choose to tweet about it instead of tooting here:

Risks of synchronized low yields are underestimated in climate and crop model projections - Nature Communications

Simultaneous harvest failures across crop-producing regions are major threats to global food security. A strongly meandering jet can trigger these, however, climate and crop models underestimate effects with consequences for climate risk assessments.

A few highlights from the Carnivorous Garden today…

FWIW, the diversification of Sarracenia (North American pitcher plants) into the present species ensemble occurred in the early Pleistocene, about 1-2 Million yrs ago.

After four days of productive meetings with my #CriticalZone colleagues, it feels great to be back in the mountains for fieldwork. First stop: the beautiful rock glaciers on the northeast side of Mt. Peale in the La Sal Mountains, #utah. #permafrost #geology #drone
