With this release, you’re getting bug fixes, performance tweaks and quality of life improvements, as well as our first steps towards Cap’n’proto based RPC.

An important note: Flakes turn even colder, as our implementation of them enters the freeze period.

Froyo: A tasteful way to organize your Nix code

This is a tidied up version of some work I did at the beginning of the year, based around the idea of bringing a flake-parts-like experience to stable Nix code. It has a pretty basic API right now, but I’ve had a lot of fun playing around with the possibilities - even in flakes! Feel free to give any feedback or ask questions 🙂 How do I use it? A minimal use case would probably look something like this let inputs = { nixpkgs = <nixpkgs>; froyo = builtins.fetchTarball ...

@jakehamilton The former would be in a personal capacity, and can be reasonably separated by most people (or by their peers on the SC if the person fails to do so). Again, other members of the SC/Lix team/ do this all of the time

The latter is explicitly an action in a professional capacity, for his company. That cannot be reasonably separated

These are simply not equivalent.

@jakehamilton And it's fine. I really get it TBH. Trust me, the moment I saw the words Anduril again, I rolled my eyes. Same with their ignorant "electromagnetic warfare team" job postings. Shit needs to get figured out. I'm tired of it

But I'm just not sure if this is one of those cases. This is about Tom, and how SC members should generally manage possible conflicts of interests from their employer

What it really feels like you're suggesting here is that we basically tell all elected SC members "never work for Anduril or you get kicked out". I'm not sure that's a very reasonable solution though, especially when there are a ton of other asshole companies out there. Should we hold a separate vote to name specific organizations elected members should never be allowed to work or contract for? That's a pretty hard commitment to make, especially when realistically, people do need to put food on the table

That's why I think it's good to have the already existing procedures for ensuring that people who are personally serving aren't just corporate puppets, regardless of company. Because even if we blow Anduril out of the community forever, there's Lockheed, Raytheon, or maybe some other company that turns evil and wants to make their own Proprietary Distribution of our stuff. We shouldn't need to make a special case and go through all of this again just to ensure that people we elect don't get bought out. And so far, I think the SC has done that well

@jakehamilton

does that mean that Tom is also allowed to post job listings?

Assuming that would be an Anduril job listing...I'd assume not, as he would just be a representative for Anduril in that capacity

I have no idea why you're conflating this with him acting as an SC member though, as very clearly, he was elected to that position in a personal capacity over a year before he even started employment at Anduril. If he were to stop doing that and act as a representative of Anduril in the SC, there would obviously be an issue

...but that hasn't happened. And again, if it did, there are procedures to handle that even if you do not trust Tom whatsoever. There are 5 other people right beside him

Your entire argument here is that Tom has now only become a puppet for Anduril, with no real evidence of that being the case aside from him being an employee there. And once again, you're not always just a blind puppet for the company you work for

Just like the rest of the SC, the Lix Team, and countless other projects out there in the FOSS community, it's very much possible to do things in a solely personal capacity, and properly recuse yourself when there is a conflict of interest

@jakehamilton

They can't be bad enough to be banned from posting job listings, but also not bad enough to be allowed to buy seats on the SC.

I 100% agree with this. In fact, no company should be able to do that

What I'm disagreeing with here is that I don't think Anduril has bought a seat on the SC. I think it is very unreasonable to assume single employee of a company is simply a puppet for said company, especially when they otherwise have a very good reputation in said community. I'm sure you would also make many different decisions than your previous or current employers, just as much as I would

And even if this was the case...it's not like Tom has infinite power. He can (and way more than would) be kicked out by other members of the SC in any important decision, or just plain outvoted even if they wanted to avoid the bad PR of ousting someone for what reason

Again, sounding the alarms as if Anduril now has full control of the whole community just because they hired a single person a few weeks ago, and when there is still the whole rest of the SC, is unreasonable

They've hurt and constantly trolled us enough. I don't think we need to be spreading that kind of fear too and making them out to be some unstoppable boogieman that's already defeated us

We all have a voice, and we can use it in the next 2 months to make sure it's known we don't even want to risk the offchance of this actually happening
