Remember, Anduril is banned from making job postings, but is not banned from participating in the Steering Committee. Why is it that they aren't allowed to post jobs, but are allowed to control the direction of the whole Nix ecosystem?

@jakehamilton I'm going to preface this by saying I obviously hate the MIC and Anduril. In fact, I've spent most of my adult life so far (and a bit before that) dealing with shitty defense companies constantly advertising and influencing the area I grew up in, and being very close with the schools I attended. It's gross, and I am thankful to have been in a position where I didn't ever even really need to entertain the idea of interning or working with them to put food on the table. And it really does suck to see that same sort of thing wiggle its way into a community I love

With that said, I very much feel this post is a bit misguided? Sensational?

I'm genuinely asking here: how is Anduril "control[ling] the direction of the whole Nix ecosystem?" through Tom's place in the SC?

I mean yeah, he started working for them in the last few weeks...but what kind of impact does that have? Do you assume Tom has now become only a mouthpiece for his employer in that time? Is the rest of the SC simply letting him have free reign over all decisions?

@getchoo

My post points out that the company is banned from advertising on official Nix platforms, but is not barred from funneling money into individuals in positions of power. I believe the two of those positions conflict with each other. Either you should be okay with the company participating like everyone else or you should be excluding them. They can't be bad enough to be banned from posting job listings, but also not bad enough to be allowed to buy seats on the SC.

@jakehamilton

They can't be bad enough to be banned from posting job listings, but also not bad enough to be allowed to buy seats on the SC.

I 100% agree with this. In fact, no company should be able to do that

What I'm disagreeing with here is that I don't think Anduril has bought a seat on the SC. I think it is very unreasonable to assume single employee of a company is simply a puppet for said company, especially when they otherwise have a very good reputation in said community. I'm sure you would also make many different decisions than your previous or current employers, just as much as I would

And even if this was the case...it's not like Tom has infinite power. He can (and way more than would) be kicked out by other members of the SC in any important decision, or just plain outvoted even if they wanted to avoid the bad PR of ousting someone for what reason

Again, sounding the alarms as if Anduril now has full control of the whole community just because they hired a single person a few weeks ago, and when there is still the whole rest of the SC, is unreasonable

They've hurt and constantly trolled us enough. I don't think we need to be spreading that kind of fear too and making them out to be some unstoppable boogieman that's already defeated us

We all have a voice, and we can use it in the next 2 months to make sure it's known we don't even want to risk the offchance of this actually happening

@getchoo does that mean that Tom is also allowed to post job listings? After all, he is just one employee with good standing in the Nix community. There does not appear to be a clear line around what is acceptable for a company in this position (and its representatives) to do.

@jakehamilton

does that mean that Tom is also allowed to post job listings?

Assuming that would be an Anduril job listing...I'd assume not, as he would just be a representative for Anduril in that capacity

I have no idea why you're conflating this with him acting as an SC member though, as very clearly, he was elected to that position in a personal capacity over a year before he even started employment at Anduril. If he were to stop doing that and act as a representative of Anduril in the SC, there would obviously be an issue

...but that hasn't happened. And again, if it did, there are procedures to handle that even if you do not trust Tom whatsoever. There are 5 other people right beside him

Your entire argument here is that Tom has now only become a puppet for Anduril, with no real evidence of that being the case aside from him being an employee there. And once again, you're not always just a blind puppet for the company you work for

Just like the rest of the SC, the Lix Team, and countless other projects out there in the FOSS community, it's very much possible to do things in a solely personal capacity, and properly recuse yourself when there is a conflict of interest

@getchoo is Tom allowed to run for SC in the future while working at Anduril? If so, why aren't they allowed to post job listings?

@jakehamilton The former would be in a personal capacity, and can be reasonably separated by most people (or by their peers on the SC if the person fails to do so). Again, other members of the SC/Lix team/ do this all of the time

The latter is explicitly an action in a professional capacity, for his company. That cannot be reasonably separated

These are simply not equivalent.

@getchoo and what is the problem with him acting in a professional capacity for his company? Why aren't they allowed to make posts?
