Assorted thoughts on “Contemplation and Ease”
I'll consider this my first complete piece of the year. I will likely do some revisions and edits of it later on, but for the time being, I will say it is done.
This is an expansion on photo drawings I've done in the past, with much more effort and care put in to them. I had been fond of those type of drawings already and I've been wanting to get away from just drawing characters without context/floating in space.
These characters are from a message board I've been frequenting for a while now. Gondola is popular enough that some in the audience may immediately catch him, but the others, Glegle and Blueboy, are more obscure.
Making "reaction images" has been a habit of mine for years now, but I've rarely shared them in that context. I always look for the proper art thread to post things I've made, which defeats the point of making image to use in spontaneous situations.
Although I didn't follow through on the "reaction image" aspect of these pictures, what did come through is my affection for healing/soothing media. There's a particular warmth I wanted to impart in to my work and I feel I was successful in that here. Even the lines I use feel soft.
I wanted to blend the character in to the photographs more and more as I went along. I first did this with coloring lines, then I pushed this further when overall color tones I used for the cartoons.
The first image is more typical of my earlier pieces, which were much less polished and incomplete. But as I worked on the second picture (which I placed third in this sequence), I took far more care and paid more attention to how the lines looked, clearning them up and giving them more texture. It came out so well that I want to go back to the first image and clean that up now.
I felt the middle image in the set would be the easiest and require the least effort, since the more difficult parts were all hidden. But, I made sure to put some effort in to it anyway, and I am glad I did.
I’d like to do more pictures like this going forward, but I also want to work on widening my horizons. The subjects I tend to gravitate toward are limited, thus there are certain messages and ideas I can’t explore. I’m studying the basics of draftsmanship regularly, but I also think I’ll need to sow interest in more varied things to really make my skills flourish. For this purpose, I’ll be doing a lot more research and digging around the public domain for things I can play around with artistically.

I normally don't do seasonal stuff, but I felt the tug to this time around.
