From my thread on Twitter, it looks like the large explosion at Pavhlorad, Ukraine yesterday was approximately 1.3 kilotons TNT equivalent from around 1,800 tons of solid rocket fuel detonating in a fire after Russian attack. Probably not worth the sort of investigation as Beirut harbor blast as few casualties, but some round numbers for scale.

@tchambers @activitypubblueskybridge @mmasnick @anildash @manton Before you invest too much energy in this effort check out the Bluesky Terms of Service for using the AT Protocol. Currently they are asserting a unrestricted free-for-all license to any content the touches the AT Protocol (https://staging.bsky.app/support/tos). Seems crazy, but arguably you could be opening the door to giving Bluesky all the Fediverse content. In any case, the #DataProtection issues need to be nailed down.

A mechanism for #LongCovid

I am beyond excited to finally be able to share what I’ve been working on for the past year.

At the beginning of March 22, I discovered a potential mechanism for #LongCovid. It was a unifying mechanism that could explain every single symptom that patients were reporting, something I never thought possible for a disease that has over 200. Yet, this mechanism actually did.

Hypothesis: inflammatory acid-base disruption underpins Long Covid

The mechanism of Long Covid (Post-Acute Sequelae of COVID-19; PASC) is currently unknown, with no validated diagnostics or therapeutics. SARS-CoV-2 can cause disseminated infections that result in multi-system tissue damage, dysregulated inflammation, and cellular metabolic disruptions. The tissue damage and inflammation has been shown to impair microvascular circulation, resulting in hypoxia, which coupled with virally-induced metabolic reprogramming, increases cellular anaerobic respiration. Both acute and PASC patients show systemic dysregulation of multiple markers of the acid-base balance. Based on these data, we hypothesize that the shift to anaerobic respiration causes an acid-base disruption that can affect every organ system and underpins the symptoms of PASC. This hypothesis can be tested by longitudinally evaluating acid-base markers in PASC patients and controls over the course of a month. If our hypothesis is correct, this could have significant implications for our understanding of PASC and our ability to develop effective diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

This is cool. When does a planet look like a comet? When it sports a long sodium tail, as seen in this recent capture on the front page of today's Space Weather, courtesy of Sebastian Voltmer: spaceweather.com - Voltmer used a special sodium filter to capture the elusive sodium tail of Mercury. Suspected since the 1980s, the tail was finally confirmed in 2001, and seen upclose via NASA's Mercury Messenger spacecraft. The tail reaches maximum luminosity over the next week.
