The irony of the nomination of "not a prop" #ByronDonalds for #speakerofthehouse by hard right #GQP white supremacists can't be overstated.
It's only exceeded by their utter delusion that advancing an archconservative who happens to be Black, gives them any credibility whatsoever on #civilrights
What absolute nonsense! They would never nominate anyone who wasn't absolutely committed to their destructive fascist agenda, regardless of color.
If I have any schadenfreude at all, it's this:
The #shitshow in the House these past 3 days has absolutely vindicated my position that THERE ARE NO POLITICAL INDEPENDENTS. "Centrists" and "moderates" are a both a fig leaf for partisans, and a figment of people's imagination.
Anyone who has a coherent political philosophy of any kind *is forced to choose a side.*
They might not wholeheartedly endorse everything that side stands for. But they are closer to one side than the other. And if they want to get anything done, they have to commit.
The sides:
Dems: Good (accountable) governance and equal rights: "We should have fair elections where everyone gets to vote and whoever gets the most votes wins."
GOP: Obstructionism, conspiracy theories, public lying, bad faith and white supremacy: "We shouldn't have elections if that means we might lose."
There's no sugar coating this unless you're basically a weasel committed to injustice--who's too embarrassed to own up to what you believe. There's no "fiscally conservative, socially liberal." There's no way to say "I like Dem policies, but they're alienating moderates."
You going to try to say any of that bullshit with a straight face? π π
Pick a side. Or you're a coward in denial.
Even if he could get the votes, Kevin McCarthy poisoned any potential speakership by allowing a single member (or even 5) to initiate proceedings to "vacate the chair."
It's the dumbest capitulation to #minorityrule I can remember. In a nation absolutely plagued by minority rule (which includes "supermajority" requirements to accomplish anything).
What the hell is even the point of having a representative body of 435 people, or leadership at all, if any one person can derail the entire body?
What else does "rule by one person" sound like?
Ta-da! #authoritarianism
It's nucking futz!
Any pundit who is criticizing Pres. Zelenskyy's attire is failing to read the room, but moreover, they're just completely missing the point.
A country and its leader under immediate and existential threats have no time for suits and neckties.
He has no visible rank or medals or nametapes or epaulets or brass buttons or starched creases. He's wearing what women and men who are fighting on the frontlines in Ukraine are wearing.
He's wearing the urgency of the moment.
That's the point.
