Small life update for the new year. I left my job in June and have gone off to try to carve my path. That means structuring my life and work to do the things I love and that don’t drain me. This journey has led me down the path of founder.

And it has also led me to focus on multiple things instead of just one. This gives me different dials to turn up or down, something I have not had. I know it is a gift to be able to do this and I am not sure where this leads.

Looking ahead with gratitude!

What is “appropriate”? ✅

Why is this expected? 🎁

What is professional? 💼

I am asking myself these questions every day 🤔

Consistently I find that the answer is rooted in white supremacy ☑️

The standard bearers are gatekeepers🚪

Those kept outside the gate are Black people, People of Color, Women, those who identify as LGBTQI, and the list goes on 🏳️‍🌈✋✋🏽✋🏿

Dismantling white supremacy means rewriting these rules 🖊️

I work in tech and I’m cofounder of The Riz Test, researching how Muslims are portrayed in Film & TV, and also the Seen on Screen Institute.

I’m conducting research for my part time PhD on how poor representation of Muslims in the Arts has downstream effects on biased algorithms and AI. I speak regularly on the topic at universities, tech & media conferences and sit on the BFI Muslims on Screen Advisory Board. Come say hi!
