Things I've learned about Mastodon this week:
1. Photo captions are read by screenreaders for people who have impaired vision. The more descriptive you make them, the more people can appreciate your post.
2. Hashtags should be "camel style" which means you capitalize each word in the tag - this enables screen readers to identify different words in the tag,
3. Reblogging boosts posts and favourites do not.
4. Hashtags are way more important here than on the birdsite.
Hello #Kolektiva! We just introduced a new translations feature. 🤩
You should now see a clickable "Translate" link on posts that are translatable.
All translations are done locally (on our server) through the 100% Open Source Machine Translation API LibreTranslate: https://github.com/LibreTranslate/LibreTranslate
This feature is *beta*, which means not every language is available and sometimes a translation may fail, or may be of questionable quality.
We're excited about this, happy tooting!
PS: It's a little resource intensive, so it may take a moment.
Random notes thread (not well organized)
begins with Talcott Parsons structure of social action
why there?
- Parsons presents convenient pre-sociological dichotomy between opposing positivistic and idealistic theories of action
- then claims to resolve with voluntaristic theory of action
- genealogical approach places each of three theories in a camp with prominent names
- Parsons interestingly self reflective about whether voluntaristic theory is ideological or a scientific advance
- Parsons takes broadly a Hobbesian view of humanity hence first of all inadequacy of positivistic theory due to naivete and secondarily idealistic theory by externalizing normativity from its conditions
The above points allow Clarke to stress both the inadequacy of the neatly separated campist origin story hence the unoriginality of the voluntaristic theory as well as to attempt to take up Parsons self-reflective challenge on why the appearance of voluntaristic theory at all
Sometimes people in my country ask me: "oh, you're an anarchist, so tell me why Polish anarchists are such pussies, yo? Like, I heard that in the West they are burning police cars, throwing molotovs and stuff, but in Poland? You just cook food for the homeless".
I forgive them, for they not know that Polish police is quite capable of harming itself without any help from the outside. Like few days ago the police chief from Warsaw has fired from rocket-propelled grenade launcher he got as a gift from Ukrainian special forces. Yes, in the building. Right now three floors are barely standing and all offices are badly damaged by an explosion.
On 7AM, probably when the whole precinct was waking up from drunken all-night party, he wanted to show his colleague the gift, so he just aimed it at the floor and fired.
