One of the leading newsrooms in trust-through-transparency is @ProPublica

Here, they publish a review of criticisms they got after publishing a story on the lab leak hypothesis in debate over the origins of COVID-19.

This is quite different from the "we stand by our story" routine.

In fact, they DO stand by their story in this case, but they also take criticisms seriously and respond in detail, which is sound practice.

Editor’s Note: A Review of Criticisms of a ProPublica-Vanity Fair Story on a COVID Origins Report

ProPublica is an independent, non-profit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest.

Politico put it this way:

"The former president and the person that polls show is still the most likely GOP presidential nominee in 2024, today on Truth Social called for the suspension of the Constitution."

This poses a problem for journalists who would cover the 2024 election. By what logic can that coverage proceed?

Neutrality makes sense only within a constitutional order that his candidacy is trying to upend. "Just report the news" pretends this will be a normal campaign.

As Greg Sargent of the Washington Post points out...

https://washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/12/02/kevin-mccarthy-jan-6-committee-protect-trump/

...simply to call it a "counter-investigation" is too credulous. House Republicans have not shown there is anything to investigate.

So let's try a rewrite. Instead of "the G.O.P. is planning its own counter-investigation" how about...

"McCarthy's letter was the latest sign that the G.O.P. is struggling to find any factual basis on which to investigate the Jan. 6 investigation."
