As Greg Sargent of the Washington Post points out...

https://washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/12/02/kevin-mccarthy-jan-6-committee-protect-trump/

...simply to call it a "counter-investigation" is too credulous. House Republicans have not shown there is anything to investigate.

So let's try a rewrite. Instead of "the G.O.P. is planning its own counter-investigation" how about...

"McCarthy's letter was the latest sign that the G.O.P. is struggling to find any factual basis on which to investigate the Jan. 6 investigation."

#journalism #NewYorkTimes #Jan6

Kevin McCarthy reveals exactly how the GOP House will protect Trump

Get ready for a massive smear campaign designed to discredit revelations about Jan. 6.

The Washington Post
@jayrosen_nyu The more they look the worse it'll be for the GOP.
@jayrosen_nyu C’mon, “Papers of Record”. Do better journalism. Get beyond lazy reflex.
@jayrosen_nyu In other words, the GOP plans to scream "I know you are but what am I" for a couple years.
@jayrosen_nyu It won't matter to the magas, who apparently have zero ability to recognize when they're being duped. If they're aiming for the margins, the Reagan Democrat types, they are speaking to people who barely pay attention -- in that case, they are just trying to make noise (so 1/6 will look simply like a squabble across the aisle, something to ignore). Imo.

@jayrosen_nyu

McArthy's letter is hilarious. Any investigation always preserves its communication. Ignorance of that fact demonstrates McArthy's ineptitude as GOP speaker of the house. What a collection of idiots.

@jayrosen_nyu Times headlines are weird and getting weirder. This one for a story where McCarthy's aim is do a whitewash and/or investigation of the 1/6 committee, CA11"scrapping" Cannon's decision.
They're not just bad, dishonest, obfuscating but a little nuts.
@jayrosen_nyu If there’s nothing there, it’ll hurt Republicans more than help them. Like the Benghazi witch hunt.

@jayrosen_nyu

These absurd #Republican "investigations" remind me of the old comic strip "Spy versus Spy"

@jayrosen_nyu Did you catch their climate change articles while on WP? I hope so, because this soil scientist thinks its the real news and all the rest is a diversion as collapse proceeds with business as usual. But hey, maybe the uptick in geophysical activity caused by that change will save us by ejecting sulfur into the stratosphere and keep up under 3C, for a while.

@jayrosen_nyu It’s yet another sinister form of NYT both-sides-ing. One side has an investigation? The other side has a counter-investigation.

In actuality, one side has nearly completed an investigation and the other side will now attempt to sabotage and discredit it.

@JamesGleick

Correct.

@jayrosen_nyu @JamesGleick Never has the U.S. population needed to have been trained in critical thinking more than this moment.
@JamesGleick @jayrosen_nyu
Like the word "audit," the very word "investigation" signifies seriousness and legitimacy.
@jayrosen_nyu If McCarthy and his band of mis-fit haven’t learned the real reason why there was no red wave in this past mid-term e.g. Americans want democracy and no lies (eg election deniers), they will suffer defeat in 2024.

@jayrosen_nyu

THANK you, @jayrosen_nyu.
THIS ISN'T THAT HARD, New York Times!!! Why won't you do better?

@jayrosen_nyu Haven't we learned that no amount of valid criticism of media coverage of the right seems to produce any change?
