Signal is not a perfect product. There are many valid gripes to be had about Signal.

  • Signal is less fun than other apps.
  • Signal doesn't scratch the "data sovereignty" itch.
  • Signal's insistence on requiring phone numbers to enroll is simultaneously perfectly logical for its intended use case and also extremely inconvenient for many of its users. (Remember that usernames obviated the need to exchange phone numbers with your contacts.)
  • MobileCoin. Enough said.

But practically everything that tries to compete with Signal, or claims to be "more private" than Signal, has failed to meet the bar set by Signal's cryptographic security.
