I study energy use, electrical demand and carbon emissions in buildings. I have a background in modelling and simulation, from FORTRAN to Python. Occasional stories about my family, my dogs and my boat. Views are personal. He / Him

Perhaps most importantly, wetherization measures have positive impacts on building durability, risks of condensation and mould, indoor air quality and comfort. They keep our buildings and our occupants healthy.

Suggesting people take a shortcut around these measures may lock them out of the long term benefits - an expensive heat sized for high loads may be inefficient or even incompatible with lower load homes.

@richardwerskine

It's also true that better insulated and better sealed homes are better candidates for heat pumps no matter where you are. Heat pump efficiency is a function of both load and temperature. Lower load homes will experience higher COPs and less time on backup - saving energy and money.

@richardwerskine

Hi! When you make generalizations like this, please reference the context you are coming from. It's true that most homes in relatively temperate UK climates might be heat pump ready, but it's definitely not the case in colder parts of Europe and North America. Readers from other parts of the world may presume your advice is suitable for them, but it will actually lead them astray.

A couple of weeks ago I was privileged to give a talk on #HeatPumps to the National Farmer's Union. My co-presenter, Glenn Wright, also shared some fantastic firsthand experiences about putting a heat pump in his own house.

Glenn's anecdote about Harold Orr visiting his reno project was my favourite part.

“Hydrogen should be used judiciously, to address emissions that can’t be eliminated in other ways.”

But: “Many of the uses being touted do not tick that box.”

Overhyping hydrogen as a fuel risks endangering net-zero goals

Hydrogen is touted as a wonder fuel for everything from transport to home heating — but greener and more efficient options are often available.

@ZaneSelvans oh great. I was confused because it seems like you need a twitter handle to verify yourself in the spreadsheet.

@ZaneSelvans Hi! Do I understand that the #EnergyMastodon community would be limited to folks who previously participated in #EnergyTwitter ?

What about energy peeps who were tooters first? And maybe mastodon.energy is a logical place for those people to congregate?

Hydrogen House Deploys Solar-Activated Rooftop Panels

Researchers in Belgium are preparing to market rooftop solar-activated panels that produce hydrogen gas instead of electricity.

(2/2) Also happy to share this super satisfying video of glass being cut

(1/2) Visited Nordik Windows in Vars ON today. Learned about innovations in cellular PVC frames and automated construction.

One key insight for me: window manufacturers feel triple-glazed units are too heavy. Good installers are already hard to find, and will become even harder to retain if windows continue to get heavier.
