Your piemaking age is the approximate number of years you’ve been making a pie plus the approx number of years the person who TAUGHT you to make that pie made it.

So I’m oldest in apple-#piemaker years (around 120), which I hope explains adequately why I had a very hard time deciding what variety to buy (and mix with Granny Smiths) when the store didn’t have any of my usuals, just a bunch of newfangled sweet-eating hybrids. I’m a very old lady, set in my ways! 👵🏻🥧

@isaacs Good to know. I mostly use Ceylon cinnamon these days, which is very soft compared to the cassia I (and most of us!) grew up with, so I should be careful!
@isaacs The progression you present is intriguing, because “vulnerable and squishy at beginning of series, invulnerable and terrifying in sequels” is the inverse of the ordinary villain-species progression (see especially: Jurassic Park ‘raptors). This seems to say something important about dogs, at least in the yes, increasingly farfetched Wickiverse ;)
@isaacs Nice! I haven’t baked much with cardamom. Perhaps an oversight…🤔
@isaacs What sort of pie is it? :)

@Ghomer That has struck me as odd, definitely! Strong stigma in the US against training dogs or roosters to fight, and yet, Pokémon for kids!

In my post, I was thinking about action/adventure movies, etc. There has been a huge backlash against dramatic dog deaths in (20th century) movies, and (rightly) you can now get a content warning on that for a movie: but I’m noticing dogs surviving *preposterous* amounts of peril, even in R-rated recent films.

@rblemberg I can’t imagine how tired and tense and sorrowful today is for you. I wish you hot beverages and small joys and rest.
I officially think the pendulum has swung too far: Hollywood is killing *too few* dogs in #movies.
@Oaktag Okay, that’s worse. I will not begrudge my wait. (I begrudge nothing about my adored Libby app, really! I am grateful!)

@RachaelKJones

Ooh! Just saw this :)

One of my friends brought quince preserves and manchego and v. thin crispy crackers to gaming once and I nearly died. So…fancy and/or exploratory preserves? And other pairings like quince/manchego must exist! I wonder what fig paste pairs with? Lots of fiber in fig paste.

Do you like hummus?

Apple slices with brie and some other cheeses! Also even cheap brie tastes fabulous baked :)
