🧵 bonus

You should be able to download the Utah report at https://le.utah.gov/AgencyRP/reportingDetail.jsp?rid=636

Be warned it's over 1000 pages (and the downloaded file had an HTML file extension that I had to change to PDF so it would open properly, but that might be a technical issue for just me). There's also two links, one of which is a summary and not the full report.

"The conventional wisdom among non-experts has long been that there are limited data [on this topic]. However, results from our exhaustive literature searches have lead us to the opposite conclusion.”

So SCOTUS is justifying their decision with blatant lies and scaremongering about "child safety." It's just as valid as justifying racial segregation based on phrenology, or climate change denial "because it snows sometimes." It's science denial, plain and simple, in service of ideology.

And here's the proof. Republicans in the state in Utah commissioned a study on transgender care, but they forgot to rig it with anti-trans researchers. The result is the most recent, most up to date, and most unbiased meta-study on transgender care. And here's the most important line in the whole thing:

The problem is that everything in that quote (except the bit about policy debates) is completely untrue. The science is settled. The safety and efficacy are known. The field isn't even evolving all that much anymore; most of the treatments are 20 to 50 years old. There's no reasonable debate, there's only unreasonable debate. What Roberts wrote is 90% bullshit, and the other ten percent is "is it ok to encode bigotry into law."

In today's SCOTUS decision Justice Roberts wrote regarding the gender affirming care ban for transgender minors in Tennessee:

"This case carries with it the weight of fierce scientific and policy debates about the safety, efficacy, and propriety of medical treatments in an evolving field."

This huge mitted tea is going to kill me

NGL I was pretty nervous about getting a new pope. Because, while a liberal or even a progressive pope might not be able to do much to help LGBTQ people, a conservative or regressive pope could do tremendous long term damage.

I'm still trepidatious but feeling a little better about this particular issue. It remains to be seen what stance he'll take on LGBTQ issues but it feels unlikely that he'll be worse than his predecessor.

@derek read the WPATH Standards of Care, it will give you most of the information you're looking for. Beyond that you just need to find medical professionals who will be supportive without being pushy (in either direction).

As others have said, the most important thing is for you to be supportive regardless of whether they end up going through with transition or not.

Transphobes be so scared of cis men posing as trans women to gain access to women's spaces that it's never occurred to them that it'll be EASIER for cis men to pose as trans men to gain access to those same spaces under anti-trans legislation. #transrights #transrightsarehumanrights #bathroombills #transphobia #logic
