we can rebuild him. we have the vibes. we can make him better than he was. better, faster, happier

The debate about QTs is interesting because as far as I tell, all sides are correct.

• QTs let you introduce a topic to your followers w/ tailored commentary (Black Twitter is the best at this)

• They bring fame & attention to the worst people in the world

• They cause dogpiles

• They’re a great format for humor, which 🦣 needs more of

• They are often performative dunking “look at this loser”

• They let you address a side issue or add a different perspective w/o derailing the primary convo

As someone recently pointed out, a whole lot of conspiracy theories and bogus scandals these days are the result of people who have no idea how anything works getting a tiny sip of information and then aggressively failing to understand it.
@chadnotchud "X diet" people are almost uniformly bonkers but the carnivore people are really S-tier weird

Seeing some discussion earlier today re: Mastodon's lack of a QT feature.

I absolutely get the arguments against and think that while some value is lost, it's positive on net.

On the other hand, QTs were formally implemented after people organically created *manual* QT/RTs. I wonder whether we'll see that start happening here, or whether they'll be so frowned on that people won't do even that. (I suspect they'll take root, eventually.)

@moultano @mtsw I am (and have been for years) pissed off at Elon *because* I want EVs/Tesla to succeed and his antics have long been a threat to that.

There's enough momentum now behind EVs that Elon's meltdown seems unlikely to really set things back too much though.

I'm going to liberally boost anything I find interesting or beautiful on here and I'd encourage others to do the same. On bird site, I might be content with my likes doing it stochastically, but we don't have that option here, so we have to relearn the habit of doing it deliberately.

Among all the other bits of advice people are sharing about using #mastodon, let me give you the most important piece of advice from 30 years of being on online platforms.

**Turn off notifications.**

Turn them off for email, for your phone, for your toolbar.

Nothing is that important. It doesn't matter if your post went viral. You'll find out when you choose to look.

I promise you, it will vastly improve your day to not have "ping" from your phone all the time.

Evolution doesn’t look how it’s depicted in pop culture. We often picture the famous “March of Progress” illustration where a series of apes stand in line leading to a modern human.

But evolution is not linear. It branches and branches. Divides in some places and recombines in others. #science

@tuckerteague I'm jealous -- Banks' Culture series is one of my all-time favorites, I wish I could read it with fresh eyes again!
