You know what I wish was the norm everywhere? That of every front yard or other property, the strip next to the road/street/pavement is for the public good. Like a mini-commons.

Put a bench there and maybe a trashcan, maybe some flowers for the bees, maybe a free library or freebox (for any items, not just books) or even free food. Plant some berries or shrubs or even a little – or big, if there's space – tree for shade or edible leaves or fruit/nuts. Maybe a water fountain in hot areas. Or even a compost toilet for everyone to use free of charge?
Even if it were just a little strip of unplanned wild garden for volunteer plants, mushrooms and insects to come and do their thing, it would already be so beneficial and beautiful!

Just imagine what villages, towns and cities looked like if even just an arm's length of space next to roads were like this. Just make it friendly and free to use.

That's what I would do if I were #SolarPunk king of the world!

And the good news is that people who own front lawns or similar spaces can already start!

@VeeBot just because it is appliance-like doesn’t mean it has to be proprietary and closed up though. Just like many old kitchen appliances could be repaired by a reasonably handy owner, I think the goal should be to change the script so that tools can be easy and accessible to the general public, and also open/repairable/hackable.

In the realm of strangely infuriating: local news keeps running articles citing the need for more ebike safety regulations, noting a rise in 'accidents'. But almost every incident they cite is a collision with a car. Isn't that a sign we need more automotive safety regulation?

TIL that the scp command does not, by default, compress files it transfers, and that you need to add the -C flag to make it do that, and by doing that I have sped up my transfer speed about 40x, and without this knowledge I have probably wasted literally days of my life waiting for things in the past.
@TechConnectify @leoncowle My Fujitsu split has an eco/auto mode with a 12F deadband (you can’t change it, as far as I know). I have it set 68-80, which is a good hedge against getting woken in the night by an uncomfortable 2 year old child in a 100 year old house with no insulation.
My main selling point to try and bring my blind friends to Mastodon from Twitter is people using alt text. I know I never claimed everyone did it all the time, but still, please don't make me look like a liar! #AltText
@harshad Ah, a tricky nut to crack. My solution for this sort of thing was to decide that I care less about 100% uptime, but I can see not everyone agreeing with that.
@harshad But if you have a battery on your solar system, do you need a UPS?
After a few failed attempts, my first successful resin print. I have been involved in #3Dprinting for so long now, it is strange to think I haven't given this a go before.
Home Assistant backups are easy and work great, even across different platforms. Spread the word ✌️
