You know what I wish was the norm everywhere? That of every front yard or other property, the strip next to the road/street/pavement is for the public good. Like a mini-commons.

Put a bench there and maybe a trashcan, maybe some flowers for the bees, maybe a free library or freebox (for any items, not just books) or even free food. Plant some berries or shrubs or even a little – or big, if there's space – tree for shade or edible leaves or fruit/nuts. Maybe a water fountain in hot areas. Or even a compost toilet for everyone to use free of charge?
Even if it were just a little strip of unplanned wild garden for volunteer plants, mushrooms and insects to come and do their thing, it would already be so beneficial and beautiful!

Just imagine what villages, towns and cities looked like if even just an arm's length of space next to roads were like this. Just make it friendly and free to use.

That's what I would do if I were #SolarPunk king of the world!

And the good news is that people who own front lawns or similar spaces can already start!

@Aurin_the_classtraitor I wish that too, but to make that viable here we'd first have to make the streets safer to stand in/next to. Right now, if someone passing by wanted to get a book out of a little free library in my front yard, they'd probably be hit by a lorry.

Then the first thing you need is safe sidewalks! (Which I assume you know... doesn't mean it's easy to get them…)
