The take-away: the world is, like, connected, man! And picking up matchboxes while traveling is highly recommended! 7/7
And the other styles have echoes all around the world: here are some that I have from Pakistan, Jordan, and even Kiribati (yes, that tiny island nation in the Pacific). 5/7
Matchboxes riffing on this key style are really common in India, at least. (Check out the amazing Matchbook book by Shahid Datawala for more proof! https://google.co.uk/books/edition/Matchbook/6YR-_p1HRBMC?hl=en&gbpv=0) 4/7
Matchbook

Designed as a large matchbox, complete with slipcase and striking edge,Matchbookis the first-ever collection of Indian matchbox labels. Curious and visually stunning, matchbox labels come in a staggering variety of designs. A well-established brand quickly spawns imitations and variations as small producers compete with the large in an anarchic marketplace. The book showcases almost one thousand colorful members of this extended family, including such brands as Cheetah Fight, Judo Deluxe, Tip Top, and New Shit. The introduction provides an insight into India’s complex match industry, where an unjust economy throws a shadow over the vibrant graphics it produces.

They looked immediately familiar to me, because I've seen so many iterations on these from around the world. Here's the SOLO Czech "key" next to a matchbox from South India ("chavi" or சாவி means key in Tamil). 3/7
This last week, I was in Prague and picked up some matchboxes in various shops. Almost all were made by Solo, with a real classic style (trademarked, too! https://solo.cz/en/o-firme/ochranne-znamky/). 2/7

In my bio, I say I'm a #phillumenist -- I collect #matchboxes. Stuff like this is why! (Small, dorky thread)... 1/7

Hugely excited to have received a Leverhulme Research Leadership Award! This will fund a 4-year project with 4 postdocs (!!!). The project is titled " 'Reputational poverty traps' and the reproduction of social inequality in South Asia and the world." The idea is to explore gossip, social censure & people's concerns for their "good name," and how these vary based on a person's position.
