Where do people go for technical recs these days?

Like, today I want an overview of current Linux distros, but other days it's RSS readers or hardware or whatever. In the past there were reputable forums and review sites. If I didn't know them I could search, skip the obvious ad bait, and next would be the good ones. But now either I can't tell the good from the slop, or it's all slop.

What's the methodology now? Where do you start for high-level tech recs?

When I see a cw line with something like "explicit gay sex," the content could be anything from a porn scene to practical advice to a really corny joke that would't be sexual at all if the cw hadn't primed it for that.

New strategy for dropping mainstream social media: Instead of trying to dump them all at once—which can be overwhelming—turn off app auto-updates, and wait for each one to inevitably demand you update to their newest ai-and-invasive-tracking release. Refuse. Then a) they're the asshole for leaving you behind, and b) the mental overhead of changing them all at once is amortized over weeks or months, making each one individually more manageable.
