I had to work late hours to examine job applications and I want to share some advice for everyone who’s looking for a job. Because it’s also really hard on the OTHER side. (Especially in places that do not have a huge HR team and machines that sort out applicants before a human sees their application.)
1) please DO include a cover letter that actually shows that you’re interested. It’s super hard if you just send your CV without any context.
I know that writing cover letters is boring and annoying but maybe it motivates you to hear that there’s future colleagues of you who try to get to know you in this little piece of writing.
What I’m interested in:
- what interests you in this job and institution/company
- how do you relate to the job ad
- maybe a personal interest or hobby that’s related
2) state your ALL language skills INCLUDING your native language. Add your proficiency e.g with the European Framework of Reference for Languages
Nowadays a CV can be translated in no time by a machine. I need to know which languages you really speak.
3) add at least one letter of reference from a former employer or someone you worked with. I don’t even know if you really exist. So hearing from somebody else that you have been excellent to your colleagues is actually great.
4) every country handles it differently but I am not a fan of pictures. Especially sloppily taken ones. If it’s not a professional foto then DON’T include it.
Your Thursday night moment of zen: Let it go! from Frozen sung in the native Klingon. 😎🤓😅

Friendly reminder that Mastodon, et al is federated, which means you almost certainly won't see every reply on a thread.
Let's say you're reading a post from "reasonable.domain". And someone from "cesspool.domain" replies to it. If your instance blocked "cesspool.domain", you won't see that reply.
This effect minimizes the appearance of harm. It can be a blessing, but it also means you won't always see the problems inherent on these platforms.

I heard last week that the physics teacher of the daughter of one of my colleagues told the daughter that girls who do their nails don’t do physics. Sigh.
So, here are the nails of an internationally leading particle physics professor. My nails.
