@AmyTanMD Oh, this makes me so sad to know, that book changed my life and the lives of at least two people close to me, all for the better — still, I appreciate the background information, now at least I can qualify it when I’m recommending it.
@JosephMeyer also may I ask where you’re based? I’m in New York City now, and I worked in New Orleans for several years
@JosephMeyer there’s another good article (I linked it below) that illustrates this tension really well, where people that all mean well end up working against each other and the people that often end up losing are the most vulnerable. I do think fear of litigation comes into play too — I agree that we need to move to a more nuanced understanding (and everyone involved needs more resources). https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/06/how-san-francisco-became-failed-city/661199/

@MammalAmongMammals I’ve been thinking of you so much the past few days, sending serenity 💓
@JosephMeyer wow so many good points here — particularly about civil liberties vs. threats to survival — I’ve witnessed over and over the agonizing calculus between those two (and been the one agonizing)

Wow, I knew this was coming in a boring-dystopia kind of way but I didn’t think whoever did it would be dumb enough to tweet about experimenting on 4,000 people without their consent.
Opinion | I Am the Last Barrier Between My Sister and New York City

My sister lost her job, her home, her life as she’d known it. And it could have been even worse.

This is such a beautiful, heartbreaking piece on both the emotional difficulty of watching a loved one suffer and the logistical difficulty (at least in the US) of getting needed help for mental illness when the patient lacks insight into their condition. @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs also not a vet! But your post reminded me of an article I read about pumpkin toadlets and the vestibular system and balance (https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2022/06/pumpkin-toadlet-frogs-uncontrolled-landing-jumps/661262/) and maybe it was trauma there from the ear mites.
A Frog So Small, It Could Not Frog

Most frogs can jump and land with the precision and grace of an Olympic gymnast. And then there’s the pumpkin toadlet.
